I just wanted to say hi as I am new to this group. I will try to briefly describe my 21 year battle with fibro and my experience with SS.

I am one of the rare and lucky people who was approved the first time around. It is unusual I know but I must say I think the key was documentation, documentation and more documentation. I worked as a Medical Technologist for 30 years and one day, 3 years ago I couln't do it anymore. My life was pain and work and work and pain. Since I am alone and single I felt I had to work or there was no way I could survive financially.

In 1997, after living with fibro for 9 years I was in a rear end collision and was out of work for 4 months. I don't need to explain what that accident did to me as severe whiplash is difficult especially when you already have fibro.

Since I suffered from alcoholism and depression for 20 years I sobered up in 1987 and saw a therapist who I continue to see. I saw a chiropractor the whole time as well as my primary care physician. Where I am going with this is that I had all these visits documented in my huge medical file. When I got in the wreck I began seeing a Rheumatologist, a Neurologist for the migraines, an Orthopedist, a massage therapist, an Endochrinologist for Grave's disease which I got after the accident. I also saw a psychiatrist once or twice for medications which my therapist couldn't prescribe. So for the last 20 years my life was a full time job and a full time job of appointments after work. I believe all this proof is what helped me to get approved the first time.

I applied 4 months after I left my job and was still on short term disablilty from work.I went down to the SS office and was interviewed by a really nice guy who took my information and got to see the pain I was in. He said when I was leaving that if I should get denied to appeal the very next day and let the judge look me in the face to see what kind of pain I was in. That was very unusual to get help from the examiner. I had my exam with the SS doctor in January which was 6 months after I left work and was approved immediately so there was no lapse in my short term disablilty and SSD.

That is a short version of my very long story but a friend of mine who was approved the first time used to tell me to document every doctor I saw and to establish a paper trail. I took her advice and it worked. Also I was 50 when I applied and the rules change a bit as SS believes it is more difficult to be retrained for a job after 50 so that also helped me.

I hope I made some sense and helped someone out there who is going through life with this pain and fear. There are many nightmares about SS but I am proof that miracles do happen. Have a blessed Day!

You were certainly blessed to get it first time around. I am on my second appeal. It can be very frustrating.

Do you think your hx of alcoholism and depression helped you in getting your SSD the first time through?

I certainly think that the depression helped me get it but when he questioned me about my alcoholism he wasn't very nice. He asked how I stopped and I proceeded to tell him and then he replied "well that's a nice story but alcoholism is not considered a disability". He was very sarcastic about it. At that point I really thought I was denied. So all is can say is I am sure that the ongoing treatment for the depression did help.

I was told in Maryland that I was not admitted into any

inhouse treatment faciliities and therefore my 2 year treatment of depression meant nothing r/t my disability claim. The reason I asked about the alcoholism was because my brother has been to Betty Ford Rehab and is about to go back for alcoholism and I was wondering if he could file for disability. He just lost a very high profile job because he just cannot stop drinking. We had him home with us for 4 months and it was impossible to keep him from drinking. (just picking your brain --if that is okay )

Hi Sandy, I know that being dx'd with alcoholism and depression helped with my disability claim. I was approved the first time around, but get reviewed every 5 years. They expect you to get better when you have something like alcoholism and depression. You can get treatment for those things and not have them affect you for the rest of your life...at least that's what they think!! Ive been sober for many years but still suffer with depression.

I still think that if the person doing these claims had fibro, then more people would be approved right away!!! They just don't understand this "syndrome" like they should.

I hope that everyone is doing well! Take care.

Your Friend, Chris

Unfortuntly the dx is the jugde is in a good mood or not. You can't win with that kind of judge. It's a shame realy. A lot of us have suffered for years and a judge looks at you for 5 minutes and makes a decision about our life!! kathy

I am anxious to meet before the judge. I am pretty sure I can convince him I cannot work. I dont know why but I just have a gut feeling about it. I have been "rehearsing" how I am going to say how I feel, and why I cant work. I am rehearsing because I get tongue tied sometimes around ppl who intimidate me.

I have a question for everyone.. How long did it take for you to get a decision on your disability claim? I applied for the first time on January 23rd for chronic pain due to Fibromyalgia, cervical stenosis, Myelathophy, herinated discs in the thoracic/lumbar spine, DDD,DJD,Rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. Also depression and anxiety. They sent me in for a mental health evalution approx 4 weeks ago. My attorney said they had enough information on everything else except my mental health. The psychologist they sent me to see I just started seeing per my doctors request and was in support of my disability. ( I called social security and they were fine with the fact I had recently started seeing the doctor). I was hoping her support would help. I still haven't gotten an answer on my claim and was wondering how long it usually takes? I am getting anxious!! I am going to be so scared to open the evelope!! :> We are having alot of finacial problems...

Thanks!

Hi guys! And a BIG welcome to Jett!

To add my 2 cents, which as we all know is not worth anything ! However, I do agree with the documentation! However, I think having a very good supportive doctor or doctors as well as the mood or type of judge really can affect the outcome! As someone already said, you can have all that you need but if the judge lacks true understanding you'll be denied!!

My hubby has serious depression and has been hospitalized 3 times. His psychiatrist was sooooooo supportive that it helped him a great deal. I too have suffered from fibro as well as CFS since 1987 and everything was documented but the judge really was disbelieving and denied me. I was denied 3 times but then turned 51 and was found favorable!! Is that crazy or what!! Boy, I was frustrated !!

As far as how long it can take, I think every case is different. My sister has fibro and CFS and had the nicest judge on the face of the earth!! Even the vocational guy had info on CFS and shared it with the judge and approved her. My nephew is dealing with Fibro and depression and applied himself and was approved right away without even having to use a lawyer!!! I know!!! CRAZY!!! So just hang in there you all and hope for the best!!!

Take care,

Spruce
