Good Day-

It has been recommended that I use guided imagery to help me with the pain of fibromyalgia. I was wondering if any of you have tried it and if so if you would be willing to share imagery with me? So far I have been using a solid fence in between the pain and the spine where I won't let the pain through and a little man running up to the brain telling the brain the muscle is not hurt and does not need help. Reading the book "Staying well with Guided Imagery" it state that it is more effective sometimes if I actually take into account the actually mechanism of the body causing the discomfort, well since I am not sure what actually is the cause of the pain, I am not sure how to do that, so I was hoping others would have some imput with me. BTW: So far it seems to be helping, don't know if it just distracting me enough that the pain isn't the only thing on my mind, or the brain is actually listening, but since the pain is lessened I am not complaining.

Thanks Smile

Sherri

I'm an Advocate

I haven't ever tried this. I do breathing relaxation & streching, to help me learn to relax the muscles. It helps, but I do still have pain. I hope it helps you. Not sure I could focus that much. Lol. I'm sure someone will be along shortly that may know more about this subject. Hope you're having a good day so far. Smile

I have used it in the past for asthma and do use it now for the fibro, and also find it helpful.

Yours was cute by the way, as I read yours I could see all of these things happening.

I have a good understanding of the skeleton as well as the rest of the body and I could see your little guy looking like a Mario brother in a pin stripe suit, (my brain wouldn't accept input from overalls, : snob) and I loved watching him trying to climb up the arthritic spine without making things worse. Which he couldn't do because it was the arthritic neck bones he was hanging from....and at one point with one hand....i also liked him tiptoeing in his highly polished shoes trying not to crunch the bones. I ended up laughing but that is good too.

Mine is more ethereal, and I use it to come down from a pain highErmm and pain high in this context is not a fun high, just a high level that I need to get control over and bring it down without using drugs.

That is what I mean by controlled pain rather than expecting to be pain free. Those pain free days, for us, are few and far between and must be savored.

I am not so concrete in my imagery, its all sort of Jane Austin hazy, if that makes any sense, but it works. For me.

I am very glad you mentioned this, and posted. It is a valid source of therapy, whether done alone or with the help of a CD, or with a therapist. But it is helpful, and is valid, and does give YOU the FibroWarrior another tool.

I would encourage anyone who feels inclined to give it a try. There are lots of books, CDs and even online guidance tell help you along. If it helps write up your own and use it until you have it memorized....lie down on your bed, have comfortable lighting and be comfortable read it out loud to yourself, and then close your eyes and work through it. You are retraining your brain.

And go slow, talk slow, go slow so that it slows down your pulse. and as you learn you might want to start it at the beginning of a pain coming on. Trying it in the middle of a flare might be a self defeating process.

Why?

Ermm

Because your body is used to controlling you not used to you trying to control it.

AND

Because you are trying to reprogram your brain to begin working correctly, and your poor brain has been working overtime like Joan Rivers on speed. It has gone completely haywire and this is why you ARE a Fibrowarrior.

If you do this routinely you will begin to feel like you do have control over your body. And as you grow in confidence and adeptness you can begin to make it more specific.

All this being said, I have yet to gain any adeptness or proficiency over headaches. It is only fair, full disclosure.Laughing Smile
