I read somewhere last night that most fibro folk's intolerance to various substances includes alcohol & that many people end up severely restrict their intake or give up consuming it entirely do to negative physical effects.

So, I never was a big drinker but after reading the piece I realized that unconsciously; I've pretty much completely given it up in the last few years since I developed fibro as I just don't like the effects & was wondering if anyone else had done the same?

I'm not much of a drinker either. But there are times I have chosen not to because Of taking my pain meds and not wanting to mix the two

Now you're really starting to make me wonder... I don't have a lot of typical fibro reactions. Some med sensitivities in that a few meds, I need a lot more than the normal dose to feel the effects and others, half a dose gives me a stronger effect than a full dose does most people. But alcohol is one thing that my tolerance for is high. I seldom drink because of one med, Zanaflex. All my other meds and their interactions with alcohol don't seem to affect me. Like most depressants, I get the opposite reaction in that drinking makes me really hyper. Same with pain meds. But I'll never drink at anytime of a day and take Zanaflex later that night.

I once figured, full, high calorie meal with one single cocktail at 6-8 pm and taking Zanaflex at midnight would be fine. HA! I had horribly odd dreams and I talked in my sleep about them. Hubby told me about them the next morning and I remembered the dreams vividly..but not the talking. Never thought of the connection until the next time I had a drink with a meal separated by at least 4 hrs if not longer from taking Zanaflex and same thing happened.

I have multiple reasons for not drinking now. Arava is hard on the liver as is the Tylenol in my Lortab. But even then, I'd just cut back on my meds if I chose to drink. My rheumy even says while he'd rather his patients not drink, he knows that sometimes that is too much to ask and would prefer they combine it to special occasions. So far, I've not had one in over 2 years. Even before starting meds, I'd pretty much stopped drinking. Im foggy enough with fibro fog.

That evening cocktail is probably one of the things i miss the most. When i was working 60 hours a week at are dealership it was nice to have that evening cocktail to knock the edge off. Also since i'm married to a greek it was very common to have a glass of wine at dinner. But now with all the meds i have to take i'm unable to have either, I miss that. I never was a big drinker but i did like my absolute vanilla and diet coke on occaision. Its just one more thing i've to give up since having fibro.

I didn't have any bad reactions to alcohol until I started my meds. I recently had two drinks at a wedding and everyone thought I was wasted. Usually I just don't drink but if I do, one drink is enough. On the up side - I'm a cheap date

LOL...a 'cheap date'....sounds familiar! LOL

So, I never really thought about it but I did quit drinking right before I was actually dx with Fibro. I didn't put the two together until JUST NOW!! I partied pretty darn hard for a while after I turned 21. Then, all of a sudden...I would go out, have ONE BEER/or DRINK and feel like I had drank all night, closed the bar down and went to an after hours party! It was very sudden and HORRIBLE. So, I gave it up. The next days were soo horrible it just wasn't worth it. I thought at first that maybe I had become allergic to alcohol suddenly, but that didn't make any sense!! GEEZ.......here's my sign!! Soooooooooo...now I'll have a SMALL glass of Baileys on Christmas Eve and maybe a beer or two on New Years Eve. That means EVERY first day of each new year...I'm in bed!!

That's really funny, I didn't quit drinking when I was dx with FMS but I was also 19 yrs old at the time and can you really tell anybody that they can't drink on their 21st b-day! However as I have gotten older I have quit drinking completely. I thought it was coming to the Altitude (trust me it's really funny watching someone from sea level drink in Colorado) however it never got any better. Huh.... maybe there's something to that!

I was wondering if anybody else had problems with this. I just started really noticing it. I can have one glass of wine or something and then if I have any more than that I tend to get sick. I don't feel drunk...it's just it is like my body can't tolerate it anymore. It could be because of my meds too. I dunno!

Oh Yes, read my post above!! It could be from your meds or just the Fibro...maybe the two mixed. That gives me something to do some research on! Hopefully I can come up with some answers for you/us!
