MDJunction to me

Macv"For me, MDjunction has been a place where I can share my experiences
living with the very rare bone disease called Ollier's ( Enchondromatosis ) with the parents of children recently diagnosed. I can help them not to run
into the pitfalls my parents did when I was young, give them a bit of a view
from their child's perspective and simply be there to offer support and
hope to people who are scared and just had their lives upended. I also belong to a chronic pain group and it's been a Godsend to be able to actually
talk with others who understand what I'm dealing with. Besides them helping me through my tough times, I can be there to help them as well. Here too, I can use my years of experience to help others avoid pitfalls and it makes me feel good, gives my life more purpose. MDjunction brings people
together when their suffering, at their darkest and feeling alone in this world and allows some light to be brought back into their lives. HOPE, that's what
MDjunction means to me!

I froze my back today… literally.

I got to work this morning and my back was in the usual pain but I brought an ice pack with the screw on lid. Smile I went to the ice machine, and filled it and went back to my desk and sat down. I prepared myself to put the ice behind my lower back…. Took a deep breath and then I did it… after the first minute of going Blink W00t OMG OMG OMG…it finally numbed enough that the cold didn’t make me want to jump out of my chair and I got back to work.

Throughout the day I would get up and stretch my legs or go by the bathroom ect… but I kept that ice pack on every time I sat back at my desk and I marveled at how it had taken a couple of hours but finally eased up the pain in my lower back and I didn’t take any pain killers. Cool

A friend of mine came by my office and I got up to get her a paper and she asked about the ice pack and I told her how much it helped. She said oh really so that doesn’t hurt? I said,” what doesn’t hurt?” She said I just poked you in the back did it not hurt. I didn’t feel a thing. I told her to poke me again and nope… nothing. I had frozen my lower back.Shocked It was almost 5 so I took the ice pack off for the last few min of work. I hope I didn’t do any damage.Ermm I obviously didn’t kill the nerves, I am thawed out now and the pain is back.Angry But I did have a pretty good day at work. I wonder how many times I have to freeze it to kill some of those nerves in there… I only want to kill the ones that feel pain.

My dr always tells me to try and alternate between heat and ice but the heat is just so much nicer even though I know the ice does help I am just so flippen sensitive to both hot and cold lol. I am glad it worked for you though thats great! Keep it up to get you through your work days, now that you have a trick. Wink Hugs, Stacey

My last years at work, I did the heat thing everyday, all day. Since I had a private office, I would plug in and recline in my high back chair and feel the relief wash over me. Its so nice to finally find something to help you get through the day at work!! I'm so happy its working for you!!

My docs told me to ice my head and eyes when I get a migraine. Sometimes I fall asleep with ice on and I haven't frozen or done any damage to anything. (No brain freeze!)I do alternate with heat on my back, except for in the summer.

I always ice my head when I have a migraine too but I have this really good ice pack that has a nice cloth on it so it doesnt freeze my head too bad but its great for its purpose. Wink

I've always been told when I did physical therapy that the rule is 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off when using either heat or cold. When I did PT for my back, they'd have me take a small towel, dampen it, microwave it, then wrap the ice bag in the hot towel. The moist heat feels great, then it gradually turns cold. When I'd pull the towel off the ice, it would be icy.

well you might be able to give your self frost bite to kill those pesty nerves I have debated that myself, lol

I would due as said above and rotate heat ice PT told me the same...

Ice is very painful but when it numbs you it is almost worth it...

we all have alot to give if one gets the help then some of this suffering is worth it..

remeber I am not a doctor I just say what I think

Daisy,

I have never heard of using just straight ice to ease pain . Always (as others mentioned) ice/heat; 20 minutes one/20 minutes this other.

I learned last summer when I was seriously doctoring for severe Bursitis in my knee that you CAN freeze an area of your body when leaving ice on too long. I fell asleep with ice on my knee and it was not a pretty sight after.
