MDJunction to me

aTinaL"To me, Mdjunction comes down to motivation. The support and information I have found here motivated me to take a very proactive stance regarding my illness. This led me to find medication and doctors that are giving me my life back.
More important than even the motivation, though, is the friendship I have found at MDJ. I have made some of the best friends of my entire life right here in this group. Even though most of us have never met, it feels as if we have known each other for years.
If Angels walk among us, and I believe that they do, most of them are here at MDJ.

Hi everyone, as the group leader on the C2/ON boards I don't get on the fibro boards much but I do need some help. I had an anterior cervical disectomy with fusion at C5-6. I have developed a "massive" (according to PM doc) amount of scar tissue and was wondering if this happens often with fibro patients.

So if any of you have had surgery and developed scar tissue (more than the "normal" person) from the procedure could you please let me know.

Thanks so much for your time and help.

Patty

Hi Patty,

I had exploratory surgery after a bad car wreck I was in and had my ruptured spleen removed. After that I had a lot of abdomenal pain which they told me was from adhesions, which as you know is internal scar tissue. I saw a naturopath who suggested that I could increase the blood flow to the area and "cure" the adhesions by drenching flannel in cod liver oil, then laying it over the painful area, covering it with a garbage bag then my heating pad. I did it and it helped quite a bit. I probably did it twice a day for about two weeks. Be sure not to get cod liver oil on your clothes if you try it. I'm not sure the cod liver oil did the trick or if it was just the moist heat from the soaked flannel.

I also had a lot of facial scars (I went thru the windshield) and the big one over one eye and I've had problems with the scar tissue building up there. I started using cetaphil and baking soda on it a couple of times a week to keep it from getting all flaky. My eye doctor told me I wouldn't be a good subject for Lasik surgery because of the scarring. I ended up having Lasik and cataract removal at the same time, and so far, no problems.

I have had several surgeries and am quit proud to say that my scars are perfectly healed and beautiful. My docs said they look BETTER than the average scars. I have always had very nice skin though. Didn't even get noticeable stretch marks from pregnancy. I did have an adhesion from abdominal surgery. Thats pretty typical with abdominal surgery though. I wish you luck in your quest for information.

Thanks for all you info. Recently I read my surgical note an apparently when they do disectomies (cervical) they put a weight on the neck to open it up. If this typical for fibro people, which is what I am trying to figure out, then these docs need to inform us about this extra problem, plus they should know if a patient has fibro to inform us prior to surgery.

So my quest continues. Thanks for your info and I hope I find more info here.

I'm an Advocate

Patty, I m a little behind in replying to this post but I just wanted to say that I have had a hysterectomy, gall bladder surgery and bladder ablation (so my tummy definitely looks like a train track with big scars going every which way). I have never had scar tissue/adhesion issues due to surgical procedures .

Thinking about it, I wonder if that is because I am a fast healer ~~~

At any rate, I don t think I would attribute scar tissue to having Fibro but ~~~ I could definitely be wrong.

Interesting ~~~

I had 2 c sections and an abdominal hysterectomy I had great surgeons so my scar is awesome it is tiny and you can barely see it with a bikini on nobody can see it at all, they all went over the same spot so it was perfect. I did however have to have Laproscopic Surgery to remove cysts and also scar tissue on the inside that had been causing severe pain from my prior surgeries. I had it removed 3 times but they said that the more I had it removed the more scar tissue would build up inside from each surgery so I hadnt had it done anymore. Luckily I have been ok since the last one. I wish you the best. Wink

I have cigarette paper scars from scrapes, etc and a large thick "keloid" type scar from abdominal surgery. I think that has to do more with my "probable" but still undiagnosed EDS. I could be wrong, but I don't think I am. It is possible that you are just a scarrer. Or perhaps there is a connection to something there. I hope you find out.

I have a tremedous amount of scar tissue inside my abd and sometimes it hurts very much.

As Stacy mentioned, removing it only gives relief for awhile...because you cannot successfully get rid of scar tissue.

That is why I opt not to mess with it.

My replaced knee has a beautiful thin scar and has done beautifully.

However, after having 5 abd surgeries within 3 years and complications, including MRSA twice, my adb (from under breast to pubic bone) is not for the squemish. LOL!

My surgeries have resulted in scar tissue and I spend a great deal of time massaging them down, its a painful process, even though it sounds pleasant.

My knee replacement was the worst, because it required daily painful forcing to more extreme bending. And even water therapy did not dampen the pain much.

The latest surgery where they cut out the rib.....when I cough or sneeze it feels like my lungs are going out the gap... several times a day I do some lung exercises and massage the vacant rib area to break down the tissue.I also do some lung exercises I have devised to keep the lungs open to the greatest expanse possible. when I forget it is more painful the next day, so it pays not to be lazy.

These are just my experiences, not based upon anyone elses experiences. I do not think that studies are being done, haven't seen anything mentioned, and I doubt it, because too many doctors wouldn't take us seriously yet. Don't know if this helps or not.
