So I got a job offer today. You know, the contingent one. I just have to call back and tell them my starting date. I should be really excited, but I'm still shaken by how fast I seem to be crashing lately. I'm scared to say that I will accept it and then find out I can't work it.

I know job trial and errors are something people with fibromyalgia have to get used to. I guess my concern is, do I tell them up front I will accept the position but I have this condition, or do I just let it come out on its own?

I'm really getting depressed over this...and it should be a happy event

Meds:
Geodon 160mgs daily
Tegratol 300mgs daily
Klonopin 1-2mgs prn
Synthroid .100mcg daily
Protonix 20mg daily
Hydrocodone 5/350mg prn

I wouldn't tell them up front. I would focus on the job, get lots of rest, eat well and not socialize or party for a while....just spend your down time resting.

It seems more honest to tell them up front, but as a former head nurse and manager let me tell you what I heard when people told me things like ...."I have this problem......"

1. will call in sick frequently

2. already edging for off time, lighter shifts, less work

3. BIG PROBLEM

There are an awful lot of people out there that have gotten laid off this year and would kill for an opportunity at a real full time job offer.

Dont throw it away if you need to work.

STRESS is your biggest enemy....so stressing out will make your fibro worse.

Accept the job and spend your off time resting and destressing....meditate, music, baths whatever works for you....

Good Luck!

love

Natalia

Be happy and excited and there is no reason you have to tell them if your health issues it's not required and could actually in turn hurt your chances sad but true so just let it come out later if need be. If you want to be open that is totally your call though I am not swaying you one way or the other I just know how discriminitive some companies can be especially if they have yet to see your work performance, they may see you as liability right off the bat. Look out for you. Wink Good luck!

Agree 100% with the other 2. It's not their business. Good luck. And if you can't do it, at least you tried.

Absolutely do NOT tell them or they may not offer the job. Employers only put up with ill workers because legally they have to. But they DO try to get rid of us any way they can legally smudge the reason.

Take the job and put your best face forward. I think you have to be on the job for 12 months before you can use "FMLA". So take care of yourself and try to do the best you can without letting them "in" so to speak.

That's just to cover YOUR booty cuz honey there isn't anyone else out there that will!

With Him we "live" no matter the circumstances. At His feet peace of mind can be found. Peace that passes all understanding is my quest now and forever.

Thanks you guys...I don't know why I'm paranoid. I just feel like I'm 21 and my life is almost over because of this stupid disease. I mean what else am I going to have to give up? I can't go out, can barely go to school full time, making friends and meeting people is damn near impossible, now I might not be able to work? Come on...

My husband got FMLA for me immediately, the employer gave him the app right away. I dont know about the 12 week leave of absense but we didnt apply for it for that although its good to have but we needed it to use it for time off like if I am sick and need he needs a day off here and there but it can be used right off the bat. You should look into it for yourself, its good to have it protects you they cannot strike against you in anyway with penalties or fire you. When my husband calls in for my issues all he has to say is FMLA he isnt required to specify a reason, if he calls in for himself he has to give a reason like when he was just sick. We have yet to use to the FMLA yet, we dont want to abuse it but it really is good to have. Wink Hugs, Stacey

brandi, don't give up hope. We may not be able to control fibro, but we can learn to LIVE with it. It takes time, and a lot of trial and error. I'm living proof that it's possible. I still have constant pain and I can't do all the things that I used to, but I'm slowly taking my life back.

I agree with the others. It would probably be better to wait a while before you tell them to see if you will actually need any accommodations.

I am not a doctor. Please consult with your doctor before following any advice given by myself or anyone else on this or any other forum.

I'd give the job a try - and dont mention your health concerns just yet to them. You may very well be able to handle it (as long as you get plenty of rest in your off time, etc.) Unless the job is standing all day or lifting tons of heavy stuff - it's likely you will find ways of being able to be productive and thrive at it! Mentally stressful jobs can take their toll too, it's not just manual labor jobs - but in a sit down job there are more ways to cope and have your needs accomodated. (I work a clerical job, and while its alot, it's just managable enough for me - if I had my husbands job in a warehouse I'd probably die!!) If your body fully gives out and you simply cannot do it, then perhaps you might have to admit it to them and/or give up the job - but I'm hoping and praying it works out good for you!!! Smile

ya the office environment can be hard in its own right for sure - I'm just glad I dont have to pull and lift cases of soda like my hubby - I'd neeeevvvvverrr make it!

My office issue is temperature regulation - I need it less cold (somewhere around 74 feels ok), at times my co worker likes it toooo cold - but we're trying to find a balance lol!
