My rheumy is telling me that my shoulder pain isn't from Fibro. He's sending me to a surgeon. He states that my shoulders, especially the one, shouldn't be hurting this bad for over a year now. That since I'm not getting any relief at all from the pain medication and/or from the cortisone injections- that there's obviously something more serious going on. I'm wondering if he's right. Cause, those pain meds don't do much for any of my pain. Yeah, my shoulders do hurt 'way' more than most other parts of my body. But still... honestly.... for those of us with severe Fibro.... pain meds just don't touch the pain.

I have had an x-ray and MRI of the shoulder and they say it's bursitis. He still says there's more to it. His thoughts are that I was born with my shoulders more forward than most. He says that over time, this can cause exteme pain and loss of motion in them.

I have "always" liked my rheumy (and still do). He's the one that's supporting my SSD case. *But I left there today feeling that my Fibro was all fake and in my head. He was asking me if I'd tried Cymbalta, Effexor, Wellbutrin, etc. -- which made me feel that it was all in my head and that these pains are nothing more than "other" things.

I have pain in all but one of the tender points. So can someone "please" help reassure me that it's not me! I know it isn't! But... yeah, left there today feeling horrible about myself and this whole Fibro thing.

It is not all in your head!!! I feel like that a lot, but the pain is too severe to be a figment of our imagination. I would suggest going to borders and buying this book called Fibromyalgia and Myofacial Pain...it explains a lot. The US spends 40 million a year educating doctors about fibro because there are so many that do not know how to treat it. Hang in there, keep your head up, your FMily is behind you

Several members have felt discouraged when their doctor prescribed Cymbalta since it was originally prescribed for depression. Cymbalta treats more than one condition. Cymbalta is approved by the FDA for the management of diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain (DPNP) and fibromyalgia.

Although the way Cymbalta works is not fully known, medical experts believe it increases the activity of two naturally occurring substances in the brain called serotonin and norepinephrine. These substances are thought to affect how much pain you feel.

My feeling is, some people believe fibro is in our heads regardless of whether or not we take an antidepressant for pain relief. So, if it relieves pain, take it! I know it doesn't work for everyone, but I've been taking Cymbalta for about a month and it helps me tremendously.

fibroforever, I hope you're able to identify the cause of your shoulder pain and that you find some relief soon. It sounds as if your fibro diagnosis was accurate, but that doesn't rule out other conditions.

Actually, since I have been using it, I have quite a bit better in some respects. I think having the depression lifted has helped me cope more with the FM but it hasn't necessarily managed the pain. If I take an Oxycodin however, it seems to work, maybe with the two combined, but I don't like the intestinal side effects very much.

Amy it is not all in your head, hun! You are in a lot of pain! Fibro cannot be seen on xrays or MRIS. So when you are stressed out more I bet your shoulders hurt you the most, right? I think everyone has a body part that is in pain more when stressed or anxious. Mine is my back. I have tons of issues there, and if something happens, like say, my hubby and I disagree on something and we argue, I feel my back immediately starting to hurt. It used to be my shoulders and my neck that held my stress.

Amy, good luck. I hope you are going to a nice surgeon. Just remember: Surgeons are in the business to operate, otherwise they wouldnt be in business. SO get another opinion if he says you need surgery. ((HUGS )) Very gentle ones...

Physicians are taught to treat what they see, unless they are pain management physicians which seem to focus more on what the patient is telling them. It is unfortunate that we are often treated as if our problems could not exist because they do not show up on standard testing. For me, I have found that my local pain managemant doctor quit working on me. He continues to see me when I call for appointments. I am not the only person he has done this to.

I most recently traveled to another hospital to see if I could find someone that could help me with my pain. They had some new ideas that had not been tried. I guess what I am saying is trust in yourself. You know you body. If you go to someone and they do not want to help you, then go somewhere else. No one should have to live with uncontrolled pain.
