Can I live a normal life, what can I do to make the house work not so hard. I just started my meds and I wanted to know how long does it take for the meds to make you fill better. Unsure

First of all let me welcome you to our group! This is a great place to learn and share. On the left side you will find a fms forum. There are volumes of info in those old forums. Then you post and start asking questions you need answers to. There are a lot of people at this site with a lot of knowledge. And if we don't know the answer sometimes we go hunting down the information.

You'll have to decide what a normal life is to you 'hun. Fibro is a mean little monster to have hooked onto your back, and just about every place else. I don't want to discourage you but it is not a happy thing to be diagnosed with. I reccommend you read all you can get your hands on. And alot of it for free right here in our own forums. Good Luck!!

I just bought a book today called THE FIRST YEAR FIBROMYALGIA written by Claudia Craig Marek foreward by R Paul St. Amand, MD. I have just started it but already it is good. I will let you know the more that I read.

Welcome to the group, I am still new too, but everyone is very helpful and welcoming. Any question you have they help you as much as they can.

Welcome! Glad you found our group. Smile

Well, it will most likely take a while for you to find the right med combination through trial and error, so try not to get discouraged if the meds your taking now don't work for you. I take Lyrica and Cymbalta; I felt relief from Lyrica within a few hours of taking it the first time, but I think it takes a few weeks for Cymbalta. I felt it more quickly since I was on another antidepressant previously. You'll find the meds vary from member to member.

As for housework, it might help if you break up your cleaning sessions so you don't push yourself too hard. I have a tendency to do too much when I have a good day, and then pay for it later.

You can live a normal life with the right meds, supplements, and exercise. I can't stress enough how important it is to make yourself do light exercise each day. Don't sit all day...It makes it worse.

A "normal" life with fibromyalgia is a different life for you than it is for most "normal" people your age, and different from your "normal" life in the past before you got fibromyalgia. If you can truly accept that simple, hard fact, you can then focus on making the quality of your present life with fibro the best that it can possibly be...for you and your loved ones.

Like any chronic disease, living with fibro requires numerous adaptations, changes in priority and lifestyle, accepting one's limitations and knowing the importance of taking medications, treatments, getting enough rest and not pushing oneself beyond one's capacity to endure.

Fibromyalgia is a high-maintenance condition in that it requires finding and constantly adjusting the proper treatment cocktail unique to each individual. To live a more "normal" satisfying and productive life, it is essential to find a knowledgeable and supportive doctor and group of family and friends who love and accept you exactly as you are, and don't place unreasonable expectations on you or make your life more stressful than it already is. Stress aggravates fibro symptoms and can trigger a bad flare, so it's best to avoid all unnecessary stress whenever possible. If you make taking care of yourself and your health your number one priority, you will be amazed at how much better you will feel mentally and physically, and those around you will respond in a positive way --because you then have more time and energy to participate in family activities and do the things that are important to you and your loved ones.

Is this a normal life? No. And you will never get your old life, body, and brain back again, but with a little willingness, courage, determination and hard work -- along with lots of rest! -- you can have a satisfying and rewarding life most of the time. It may be different than it was in the past, and it may be different from the life you had expected and envisioned for yourself, had hoped and planned for...but life with fibro can be good, if not "normal"....if you can learn to see the glass as half full most of the time. A positive attitude and having gratitude for what you still have and are still able to do can go a long way in overcoming difficulties and depression about the illness.

Welcome....I too have the same book as nhlflagg and I also have a book called "Fibromyalgia for Dummies". Both very good books so far.... Everyone is different, so different combinations of meds work for different people.

I have the same book... Fibromyalgia the First Year... I've been recommending it to anyone and everyone.

I have 3 other Fibro books, but haven't gotten to them yet. I'll let you know how those are as well (if I don't forget).
