I have a seizure disorder. I have had 14 seizures in a total of 18 yrs. This has been the first time I have been back to neurologist since my very first seizure. The first thing that she wanted to do was put me on anti seizure meds. Without running any tests. She is ordering an MRI and an EEG. But why would a dr give you a prescription for medication and not know for sure that is the problem. I have not taken any anti seizure meds since I was 19. So why would I now. Until the test results come back I don't know that I should even start them. Having 1 seizure a year does not mean a life of hell. I have reacted to anti seizure meds before. And in most cases they have brought on more seizures. I just needed to vent. And try to figure things out. Sometimes I think that it is easier for a dr to write on a piece of paper then to truly figure out what is going wrong with your body.

Keep fighting. Fighting back is sometimes harder than being diagnosed. Each day is a new challenge. But you can over come what ever you put your mind to.

Hi Lisa,

If fibromyalgia or migraine are part of your medical records, she might have just thought if you don't need it for seizures, it will at least help with nerve pain and prevention of migraines. I took topamax for about a year for migraines and I'm now on gabapentin for nerve pain. As you know both are anti-seizure meds with off-label uses.

But maybe she's just covering her butt in case you do have another seizure. I'm glad she ordered the tests anyway. I hope they come back clean and you won't HAVE to take anti-seizure meds.

I'm with you though, I wouldn't take those meds personally...I'm pretty anti-meds kind of...I like supplements and natural healing as much as possible.

If you are having your MRI right away I'd wait.

Keep us posted!

I am really on the fence about taking them. I know that if I watch my stress ecspecially around my period then I am okay. I don't have any issues. I have been on some meds that put me into a seizure. And they have been anti seizure meds. So I am going to go through the testing then see what happens. If I don't have a seizure during the eeg then we know what it is not. Thanks I needed the chin up today. But it is still pretty low. I want to go online yet and check out the med that she put me on.

What med did she want to put you on? I took alot of anti siezure meds off label for various reasons. I took Lamictal and Depakote ER at one point and Neurontin for nerve pain. I am on Topamax currently for migraine prevention. Sometimes I believe they just think the benefit can outweigh the risk, I am sure she didnt mean you harm. I think it may have been wise of you to stand your ground though and wait for the test to be performed before going on meds if you dont feel you need them immediately. Especially where you have reactions to them, you know you best. Wink

When they thought my blackouts could be silent brain seizures they didnt even know what they would do to treat it because I was already on such high doses of anti seizure meds for other reasons. My EEG ended up coming back fine, they still want me to go for that 3-5 day in patient EGG to try to see an episode because of course I didnt have an episode in the 30 min time frame that their EEG took place, I blacked out 6 times in the hospital but they couldnt hook up an EEG that fast lol.

I wish you the best of luck, keep us posted when you have the testing done so we know how you made out. Gentle Hugs, Stacey

Stacey I know what you are talking about. She said at this time she does not think that she will need to do that. I have been on depakote, neurotin, lyricia, and prozac. All the ones that I have mentioned I have had bad side effects from. She wants me to start at the lower dose and work my way up and see if that helps. But I am not willing to take any chances without the testing coming back that their is a reason I should be so medicated. It has been 18 yrs. I will keep you all in the loop

I dont blame you, I can see if you were symptomatic with seizuring but if you are ok for the moment I would wait for the tests to come back as well. Anti seizure meds are potent and just taking meds in general sucks so why add more unless its absolutely necessary. I pray all your testing comes back ok and you get the answers you need.
