As all of you know, my best friend is the one with the FMS and I am simply her care-taker. She has had it really rough lately. And reading all the support and care on this board helps me so much, I cannot even express it.

We finally though we had found her the right doctor. I am sure you all know how that feels. And she called to refill her lorazapam -- the ONE thing that helps settle the nerves in her legs (not RLS) besides Lidoderm Patches ($800 per month and not covered by insurance). He says he will call them in and actually called in Requip. Now for RLS that would have been fine. But, she has issues with things that monkey with brain chemistry -- especially seratonin (she could kill someone). She also has issues with things that effect dopamine (issues with several antidepressants have left her lost, comfused, missing time, etc). She also has Narcolepsy (Requip causes sudden bouts or drowsiness or even suddenly falling asleep -- goes great with the narcolepsy). She cannot take anti-epilepctics due to allergies and intollerances, not to mention that brain chemistry tihng. So, FURIOUS, I have to wait until the next morning to call GSK (the manufacturer) to get their opinion. They were not willing to say much except that with her history from what I was telling them, this drug would not be a good mix for her -- DUH!! So, I call her doctor, get the nurse, and nicely (which was hard) explain the whole thing and what GSK said. She tells me that is impossible, that they would never say that and it does not have those effects AT ALL. I am really beginning to think I should have gone to medical school!!

Anyhow, now I am in a bind. She takes alprazalam for panic attacks and wellbutrin for depression. Her PC does not want to prescribe lorazapam since she is on alprazalam even though one is quick acting and the other slow, and they work totally differently they are both technically in the same class. She does not take them together and just takes the lorazapam at night (5pm) and then around midnight or so when they wear off. It is not the RLS symptoms she has issues with -- it is nerve pain. Why do people have such a hard time understanding this??? And if I don't go with her to appointments these people just totally blow her off!!! I am so frustrated and angry right now!!

If anyhow has any suggetions i am totally open either here or PM me. I am starting looking for a new GO for her tomorrow. It just seems like once you get settled in and think someone understands they whack you upside the head just to give you a dose of reality!

Thank you for listening. It means the world to me to have somewhere to go. I hope you all don't hink I am totally crazy now. I would do anything for her. I would take her pain, her disease, anything. It tears my heart out to know what she is going through. And then to get socked with this! AAARRRGGGHHHH!!

When it comes to how medicatioins mix together, I have learned to trust my pharmacy more than my doc. I would have a talk with the pharmacy that you use. See what they may have to say.

O.K. - I know everyone respondss differently to meds but I WOULD THROW THE REQUIP IN THE TRASHCAN!!!! I have RLS;, but my doc treated me off label for fibro working me up to a dosage of 10 mg. Thats a pretty high dosage of requip. I used it and it was wonderful, I hadn't felt tht good or have that much energy in about 10 years.

But I missed 1 nights dosage. The next time it came to take the dosage I starting shaking all over. I went into a 2 1/2 hour long seizure. My doc began bringing me down slowly from the pill. The next think I know I have just been tested positive for sugar diabetes. Out of the blue! Because of my weight we check it every 3 months. So it was time to test. And my numbers were off the charts. My doc called the pharmisist and found out that on the higher dosages their are some really bad sided effects from requip. This happened in November, I still have not completely recovered from that night. I would have your friend look at the side effects and seriously consider not using it at all. I know we all respond differently but this was bad news. Good luck on findin a new doctor. Any questions we can continue on the board here or you can pm me at anytime. Good Luck! Kathy

This is why I ask my pharmacy more about my meds then my doc. The pharmacy is trained to look for stuff like this. The docs are not.
