I don't know, either. I assumed it was decreased activity (for me) and the particular meds. But the more I read, there seems like there might be something else?

So I'm subscribing to this thread....Smile

There does seem to be something else. I wonder if it has to do with our liver???? There should be a study.

Ugh, I just started to notice this too. The doctor said that because of my fibro and the meds that it might be retained water. Which would explain the swollen hands and feet issue, but there has also been some bloat in the midsection. I haven't eaten or changed my habits, just ever since the fibro started hanging around there has been a little more going on in the midsection.

*Also, for the record there is absolutely no possibility of pregnancy*

I too have gained a lot of water weight. I can gain or lose anywhere from 5-18 lbs in a night. I hate it. Sometimes my clothes don't fit at all. I work at a law firm so I have to dress professional but it's hard when nothing fits in the morning. I have noticed a lot of the weight has gone straight to my stomach. Angry

jacsingletonm,

That is a lot of water weight to gain or lose in 1 night.

I would talk to your Doctor about that if you haven't already. Unsure

Yeah, it is. I have gone to the doctor when I have been swollen like that to make sure it wasn't my heart or something really serious. They say that I am fine. That's why they sent me to the rhumatologist, I seen him on Friday and he's the one who told me I have fibro. I have water pills that were given to me that I take when it's really bad. I'm hoping that with finding this out they can get my body regulated here soon. It's really uncomfortable that's for sure!

So no one really knows why we gain weight?? That is frustrating, right? I was thinking because I don't do as much and sleep so much and I sneak any type of junkfood into my mouth that I can possibly get in there. This is really terrible because I have never gained weight in my life, except for pregnancy. I now weigh the most I have ever weighed in a non pregnancy state, it is depressing! AND honestly I was always the skinny girl. I need to be ok with where I am though. (I need to eat better too)I NEED to accept my current state and not get depressed over it. ugh.

Hi,

I've had Fibro for about 3 years. I only wish I knew about the causes for the weight gain. I am well aware of my decreased amount of activity which is due to my increased degree of pain due to the Fibro. I believe this is the cause for my weight gain in a nut shell for me anyway. While I'm not moving as much as I used to, I'm not burning up the colories I take in with decreased activity. Yup, it doesn't seem fair but I think that, is what it comes down to, soooooooooo I'm going to really be aware of what I eat especially carbs and try as hard as I can to move just a little bit more than I have been no matter how small the increase is. We all know that being overweight is the last thing we need...right? So, this, (i.e. over eating) is the one thing we have control of. This is something we can be the boss of. Yup, this is the way I'm going to handle my weight gain. I'm so tired of feeling bad about myself over this!

my love and prayers to you all,

Carol

I read that people with FM often have hypothyroidism, and I do too. The thyroid hormone tells your cells to have a certain degree of metabolism. So some cells don't have any hormone,or the cell is getting the less strong hormone version, & you'll have slow metabolism.

That's why endocrinologists help people to lose weight. My old rheumie was right by an endocrinologist, and had a shared waiting room. lots of people waiting to get to see endo for loss. i know cause I'ld watch the staff stocking the cabinet behind reception with weight loss stuff he also sold. Finally found a doc to treat mine, when I learned more about why mine could have been managed better. I've lost close to 40 lbs. My clothes are not binding down on my gut anymore. The funniest benefit is that my IPAD used to fall into a wedge at a fat roll and my body fat would send a heat signal to the bottom keys of keyboard or apps., & mess me up. hardly ever happens now.

You could see if you have any of the symptoms, like being cold. Cold c is beause of slow metabolism, but I don't know how much weight gained changes the temperature of an indivual with low thyroid.
