I say next time (hopefully there won't be one) he starts acting odd, call 911 right away. Don't even discuss it with him. Just do it. It may make him mad, but it just might save his life too. I'll be keeping you and him in my prayers.

I agree with the others. As I as reading this mini-strokes were going through my mind. I hope he does not have any more problems but he should still be checked out soon. Let us know how it is going.

Looking back I should have turned around and gone straight back to Keesler AFB to the hospital but as the old saying goes "Hindsight is 20/20."

It sounded like low blood sugar to me....those are the exact sxs:....wobbliness, wooziness, mumbling, not feeling well, vagueness, not making sense, getting cranky, not able to drive straight, not able to think rationally and getting cranky when it is pointed out...I know the symptoms only too well,

Sure it could be mini strokes, but since you have him checking "his blood sugars and 102 is good for him" why not try the easiest thing first. check his blood sugar. If you dont carry the glucometer with you because he has always been so stable this may be your first warning to begin carrying it with you, also to carry special food items to give him protein fat and carbs in a balance...Like Glucerna bars. This is assuming he is with it enough to eat a glucerna bar.

In your case on the road give him something to eat...like a carb/protein bar. If he gets better you have your answer. DO NOT GIVE HIM SIMPLE SUGARS or you will have to play with the ups and downs until he gets re-regulated.

Some of us can run very low blood sugars, My base is about 90 110 is high and by the time I realize it is low I am already in the 50s and sinking to the 40's.

If he does have diabetes or hypoglycemia, I am surprised that his diabetic teaching did not include instructions for what to do if blood sugars drop too fast or too low.

I am sorry he is having problems...both high and low blood sugars can a very cranky loved one make.

Sure he seems fine now, "for all the world" because time has passed and he has eaten etc.

For what its worth I think he had a serious low blood sugar episode and you need to know how to recognize them and then how to manage them.

Do you go to the doctor appointments with your hubby?

at any rate forewarned is your chance to be prepared. Also the difference between a high blood sugar and a low blood sugar is the amount of sugar in the blood. The symptoms are very similar and in the field with no glucometer the initial treatment while waiting for 911 would be to give them something to eat...if the sugar is already high a little more wont matter, but if it is too low they could die unless you get it up.

I recommend a small tube of icing....you can squirt it in the mouth between the cheek and on the gums. just a 2 inch strip. The mucosa in the mouth will absorb the simple sugar and bring the blood sugar up. It must be followed up with a real meal and close monitoring.

I DO NOT recommend candy or anything like that, and here is why:

many patients I have dealt with have deliberately caused low blood sugars in order to get the treats they like. Type 2 diabetes doesn't happen by accident. It usually comes from a lifetime of liking the sugary fattening treats.....that's why loosing weight nearly always can eliminate type 2 diabetes.

Please do talk to your husband's doctor, about both concerns, the hypoglycemia as well as the possibility of mini strokes. If he refuses to go in for an appointment because he "was just tired" (common excuse) then you need to be prepared.

for dire emergencies do not try to make an unresponsive person try to eat or drink, try the squirt of icing, its cheap and not likely to be abused because it is so disgusting.

for responsive low blood sugar try the Glucerna.

Good luck, sorry your hubby had the problem, for all the world I hope it never happens again.

I dispense advice freely but you should take it with a grain of salt and do your homework and check with your doctor.
