I spent about 20 minutes this evening standing in my garage in the rain holding my horse Athena. We don't have a shelter up for her yet in her new home, which ordinarily wouldn't really be a problem. But tonight we had a strong spring storm blowing in and I was concerned that it might hail. So even though I had put her blanket on, I decided to bring her into the garage just to be on the safe side.

She's really very calm about most things, but several weekends ago I had her in the back yard and she slipped on the concrete and fell. I think she remembers this and was worried about how the concrete in the garage felt under her feet. I gave her some food to munch on and we waited out the worst of the storm, and then I turned her loose back in her pen.

But I just KNOW the neighbors and people driving by were going like, "Hey Ethel, the crazy lady is at it again! Come see!" LOL

Smile lol, I'm done with wondering what the neighbors think. I do so many stupid things that if I was worried about what they think I'd have to be put in the looney bin...sometimes I think so too. lol

Well, if the neighbors think your nuts for caring for the well being of a animal....then they need to seek professional help! People never cease to amaze me. I would look and say "Awww how cool is that, she's making sure her horse is ok in the storm"...and right then & there if I didn't know ya, you'd be awesome in my book!

Wink I'd more than likely think the same thing, Crystal, but since I laugh at most anything, I'd be laughing, too. I do love horses!!!

Yeah well, a lot of people around here don't treat their animals very well. I once saw a rodeo girl breaking a young colt, and he wouldn't back up for her, so she stood him in front of a gate and had someone slam the gate into his face over and over until he backed up. And these creatures are her livelihood! Stupid!

I am proud of you for being the kind of person you are and taking care of your horse like that.

Now, if you want to wonder what your neighbors might think, imagine me a few years back trying to chase my miniature pig through a five-acre field when he got loose one day. That was a sight to see!

Or, how about the time I had to wrestle with my pygmy goat in the mud to get him to go in his shelter - and he won! That's when I lived in full view of a highway. Embarrassing!

Standing in a garage with a horse is nothing to me! Laughing

Gosh, this talk about animals has made me remember my darling doggie, KD. She was a labX... a lovely girl, all black with only a couple of white hairs on her chest.

We got her from the SPCA.

I wanted her because of a couple of things. First of all,she didn't bark when I came to her cage. She came over to the wire just close enough for me to get a finger in so I could touch her and then she swooned with ecstacy... Smile

Hubby wanted a big bruiser of a male dog that I knew I'd never be able to control or trust... no, I said, this is the dog for me and so KD came home with us.

To make a long story short.....

When we were camping in this park, there were a lot of bears that used to come thru looking of food. It was my practise to leave KD leashed to the underside of our trailer when I was making dinner.

One night, just before I was ready to bring her in, I heard her make a low growl which alerted me that something was wrong.

I went outside and looked at her under the trailer and discovered she had wrapped herself really tightly around one of the 'legs' of the camper. Then I looked up and saw a bear not 10 feet away.

KD could not leave the area and I couldn't reach her leash to release her so I did the next best thing hoping like crazy that she'd obey me.

When we were walking I taught her to go around things by pointing the way to her.

This is what she had to do now and she did it. I told her to 'go around' and made a swirl with my fingers and she did it. She had to do it several times before I could get hold of her collar and release her.

Then she, with me right on her tail rushed into the camper away from that bear.

I still marvel to this day that she stayed calm and obeyed me in going around and around the 'leg' of the camper til she could be freed.
