For years I had high enzyme levels in my liver readings as well as high cholesterol. Ultimately I was sent to a gastroenterologist for help. No matter what he gave me, my readings never changed. The gastro thought I was drinking (I am NOT a drinker). Finally, upon him ordering a liver biopsy in 1999, I was diagnosed with full blown cirrhosis of the liver and the gastro registered me for a liver transplant immediately! I SAID I WANTED 2 MORE OPINIONS since I knew I had Sarcoidosis of the lungs. Sarcoid is permanent scarring anywhere in the body and appears like cirrhosis in the liver. I was saved by my pulmonologist who specialized in Sarcoidosis as he found two Sarcoidosis liver specialists in Michigan (I am in Texas) who said my liver was working enough to avoid a transplant but I had Fatty Liver Disease which runs in families. I was ultimately given a Gastric Bypass in 2003 due to Fatty Liver Disease and Sarcoidosis of the liver. Once I lost the weight, slowly my liver enzymes began to creep back to normal -- it took 8 yrs but my liver regenerated itself to normal as of April 2007. I took every cholesterol treatment known to man to lower my cholesterol but nothing worked UNTIL I tried Vytorin in April 2008. I am blessed by God to have a normal liver now AND a normal cholesterol reading as of June 2008! Since the liver can regenerate itself, it is so important to ask for second and third opinions -- don't be afraid to buck the system -- no one will take care of you except you and you are worth EVERY EFFORT! My experience gave the old gastrointerologist new insight and education concerning Sarcoidosis as he had never heard of it before! There are GOOD DOCTORS out there who can help although it may take time/years to weed through them!

sistergal,

Welcome ! Good for you! I'm glad that you are doing that much better.I agree there are good drs. out there and no one should be afraid to look else where if need be.Being proactive is the only chance we have at good health regardless of the cause or the out come.Wether or not one responds to a cetain treatments or not depends on so many things. In the end the tx. one needs is as varried as the causes and we must look at everything in order to make informed decissions.

Gail
