Hi all - I am struggling with my Seroquel dose. Used to take 100 or 200 at night depending on how I was doing. Had a manic episode in Sept. and now I'm taking 400mg and feel so sedated. A friend here suggested I bring this up for discussion. Is anyone else on this high of dose? - can you make it through the day without a nap or get up in the morning. My doc says that I need to take a high dose now because I am at risk for another episode.

Also, I'm packing on the pounds. Didn't know until I read here that Seroquel makes you crave food and not get full. Today my need for a Hershey bar was so great that I was late for my counseling appt because I just couldn't go by the store without getting one. Really think this is just me - but I would so like to blame it on the medication!!! Any thoughts?

I sought my soul, but my soul I could not see.
I sought my God, but my God eluded me.
I sought my brother and I found all three.

I don't take Seroquel but I was taking a Zyprexa for a short period of time and it made me want to eat everything in sight. Even condiments, seriously. I told my pdoc that weight gain was a real concern for me so he switched me to Geodon which does not cause me to crave food.
Please do not take anything I say as medical advice. I am not a doctor

hummmm, good idea for a thread AnnieSmile. I talked to my doc at my last appointment about Seroquel and my cravings for chocolate particulary but I will settle for other sweets if the chocolate isn't there. He pretty much agreed with me that Seroquel does put on the pounds but he wasn't willing to change anything because I had been stable on my dosages for awhile and sleep was such an issue for me. Next appointment I am going to ask him about Geodon. Ellie, are there side effects with it and have you ever had problems sleeping. That is the only reason I would fear giving up Seroquel. During the summer when I was taking my grandsons to the park everyday and on the go more the weight didn't seem to be such an issue but I think when I get my metabolism up everything seems to fall into place better. And ladies, and Matt you can shut your ears, my shrink said chocolate substitues for something else I'm not getting much of either....Annie I had several docs tell me I wasn't on a therapeutic dosage of Seroquel whatever they mean by that so I suppose some people are on much higher dosages but not me. Thanks for starting this thread and I hope we get lots of input.

I've never heard of Geadon. I am really hesitant about switching meds because I stayed stable for almost two years on Seroquel and when I had my episode I think it was because he added Lexapro for panic attacks. He just needs to put me back on 100 or 200mg. Probably shouldn't take matters in my own hands but Mon. took 200 and last night took 100. Still fighting the urge to go back to bed this morning. Should be awake because I just went out in the cold and drove 30 min to take my daughter to school.

I don't think there is a chance at all that I will get manic right now. Have to admit I would welcome just a little hypomania right now. I'm calling him today. Thanks for the input and thanks to my new friend Sara for suggesting I start this thread.

Good idea Annie to call your doc and run the decrease of Seroquel by him. I can understand with a manic attack they would want to bring you down but if you are so down you can't get going I think it is best you get the dosage changed. I hope today is better for you. SmileSara

.Geodon is supposed to be a last resort medication according to what I read online. The reason for that is it can cause death if you have heart arythmias (sp?) I hope I don't have heart beat irregularities. I have had an ekg run before and they didn't find anything. It makes you sleepy and the side affects that I experienced were muscle cramps at night. I just like it because it hasn't made me gain weight.

Left message for the doc today. I did go back to bed and slept until noon. So unmotivated and tired - I'm wondering if its not the Seroquel but still lingering depression. I would be a freak if on something that could cause heart problems because my heart races sometimes and I do skip beats - part of panic disorder I think - but guess what - can't take meds for that due to addiction. SCREAM!!!!

hi I've taken Seroquel, now 300mg but it was 600mg this summer. Yes. I gained weight. But not as badly as Xyprexa. I read that the average is 11. BUT BUT there was a new study that showed that Provigil can 1) decrease the amount of weight gained with Seroquel and 2) increase mental alertness.

I had my doctor put me back on the Provigil (I have it for narcolepsy) pronto. Unfortunately to get it you need special approval. It's not a stimulant the way Ritalin is, but it does make you feel more evenly awake all day long. I don't get that Seroquel hung over feeling in the morning.

Another drug that you probably know squelches the weight gain is Topamax (which incidentally also decreases cravings in early sobriety). The downside is that they've observed some cognitive problems with it. It's a mood stabilizer so it's not like you're getting away from psych med territory.

But what I've had to face up to is the fact that with these drugs you simply can't consume as many calories as you could before you started them. If you don't adjust to that fact, you'll gain weight. And you'll gain it at what seems like lightening speed. And as you probably know, it takes a heck of a lot longer to lose weight than to gain it. It's the "I can't eat the way I could at twenty" syndrome collapsed into six months when you take these drugs.

I've watched my weight swing within a twenty pound window just over the three years. One year I'll be X weight the next year I'll be X-20 weight and then back again to X.

Good luck. You aren't alone. Doctors don't really understand what it does to your self-esteem when your pants suddenly don't fit anymore and you swear that you haven't been eating like a pig.

I took Seroquel for 3 years and gained weight. It seemed to level out after awhile and I would lose and gain weight by going to the gym. I'm going to ask my new doctor about topomax.

I've been taking Seroquel for about two years. I've been on varying doses, from 50mg up to 300mg and more. The hunger effect for me gets worse the more I take. I've weaned to 100mg now and it helps with sleep (important for my brand of bp), still makes me foggy in the morning, but I like it bunches better than Zyprexa.

There is a mood stabilizer, an anticonvulsant, called Topamax. It has an interesting side-effect of causing weight loss and not gain. 16% of Topomax takers lose weight.

I wonder if taking both might balance us out in that area?
