Hello Bay.

It is my opinion that a lot of BP's, and in general a lot of people being treated for mental illness, have some form of substance abuse problem which is hidden in their profile.

Others whose substance abuse problem is not necessarily hidden will still deny that they have a problem.

Dual diagnosis, a term which has been habitually applied to describe mental illness, or mood affective diseases, in combination with alcoholism/addiction, is probably more common among the BP community than most will admit. The dual problem of mental illness with addiction is nearly impossible to treat merely with medication and traditional therapy; and the dual diagnosed individual is generally referred by doctors and counsellors to a program such as NA or AA in conjunction with conventional therapy.

I hope you will keep coming back to share your progress in recovery. We all need that kind of encouragement, don't we?

Regards,

Jim

Hi, Bay, welcome to the forum, for me, had I not gotten treatment for my alcoholism/drug addiction first, i don't believe I would ever have gotten treatment for my bipolar, recognizing you have a problem is the hardest part, after that you can move on into treatment.. a lot of people don't recognize or will deny they have a problem.
