Hi Roy

My name is Janet. My husband Tim and I are in the adoption process and are being considered for a 13 yr old girl with Downs. What can you tell us about it? Are there others here that encourage you and help you get started until you know what to expect? Is there literature we can read up on? How would we know if there are other teens her age in this town? How do we find out about special Ed?

We do know that she is a friendly girl and always has a smile on her face and is very loving. I dont know her IQ but am told she ONLY speaks 3 word sentences? How common is that and what can we do if anything to teach her how to use and learn more words? Thanks

Janet & Tim

hi,as Im new here but not to downs,

i'm not sure if this will help you in your disission you said that she only speaks three word sentences with our god daughter we taught her sign languge as well she picked that up faster then speaking it helped her communicate and not be fustrated but also helped her talk we reinforsed words with sighn, also alot of the signs we all made up together have you met this child?

have you been around anyone with downs.you could read alot and reaserch which I suggest and Im not going to tell you it will be easy but they are called God angels for a reason from what I've been around and have been apart of they are so full of love and can progress much more then given credit you will be blessed with what ever you decide.we were scared to death when she was born what were we going to do she has taught us all the way

I teach 2 students who have Downs Syndrome and I have worked with DS kids for some time. I LOVE working with them. They keep me on my toes and I am always smiling when they are around! They are a wonderful part of my day. Even their attention seeking inappropriate behaviors are a blast to work on. Nothing but joy and a little bit of tough work!
