Hello, my name is Tony and I have been a diabetic for 30 yrs.The past 8 yrs I have had chronic renal insufficiency. In the the 6 months of this year, I have been hospitalized for dehydration , severely high potassium counts and BUN in the low to mid 100's on 3 occasions. He told me yesterday that I'm 6 to 8 months away from dialysis. This is all so new to me and somewhat overwhelming. To say the least, I'm scared to death about what to expect. Anyone who could enlighten me a bit further would be of great help. Thank you

You may want to talk to a nephrologist and/or dietician. My husband's brother was on dialysis for a few months back in 2001. Right now his kidneys are working at about 20%. His doctor told him what foods to eat or not eat and gave him some medication to keep him off dialysis as long as possible. This has been going on at least a year. I hope this helps you a little. My husband has been on dialysis since 2001 also but he wasn't as lucky as his brother. It can be very overwhelming. It's a very different lifestyle but it does get easier as time goes by. Just take it one step at a time. Ask questions if you don't understand something.
