- PERIODONTAL DISEASE

Damage to the gums. People who have diabetes are more likely

to have gum disease than people who do not have diabetes.

- SHOCK

A severe condition that disturbs the body. A person with

diabetes can go into shock when the level of blood glucose

(sugar) drops suddenly.

- DIABETOGENIC

Causing diabetes; some drugs cause blood glucose (sugar)

to rise, resulting in diabetes.

- HYPOGLYCEMIA

Too low a level of glucose (sugar) in the blood. This

occurs when a person with diabetes has injected too much

insulin, eaten too little food, or has exercised without

extra food. A person with hypoglycemia may feel nervous,

shaky, weak, or sweaty, and have a headache, blurred vision,

and hunger. Taking small amounts of sugar, sweet juice, or

food with sugar will usually help the person feel better

within 10-15 minutes.

- SUBCUTANEOUS INJECTION

Putting a fluid into the tissue under the skin with a

needle and syringe.

DIABETES Q AND A:

=========================

QUESTION:

What is the glycemic index?

ANSWER:

The glycemic index ranks carbohydrate-containing foods by

how quickly they elevate blood sugar levels. It is measured

by comparing the increase in blood sugar after eating 50 grams

of carbohydrate from a single food to the increase in blood

sugar that occurs after eating 50 grams of carbohydrate from

a reference food, either glucose or white bread.

Proponents of the Glycemic Index argue that foods that

raise blood sugar quickly – foods that have a "high GI"

ranking – stimulate hunger, increase enzymes that promote

the storage of fat and reduce the body's ability to burn fat.
