If you take medicine for your diabetes, you need to think about the times that you eat and also about what you need to eat when. You need to plan ahead to avoid trouble.

To go out for a meal can be great. But remember to make the right choices, ask for what you want, and if you eat out try to let it be equal to the amount of times that you eat when at home. Have fun but at the same time take good care of yourself.

General tips for going out and still eat on time.

If the chef has to make an adjusted dish for you, ask them if it will take longer.

When eating out with others, ask them to eat at the time you usual eat.

Make a reservation so that you don't have to wait for a table.

If your dinner is very late, take your bedtime snack at your dinner time. After that you eat your full dinner. Maybe you have to adjust your insulin for this.

If your mealtime is delayed, eat a fruit from that meal at your usual mealtime.

What to eat and when:

Remember the basic rules of good nutrition. Eat different foods in moderate portions, don't eat too much fat, and limit the amount of salt.

Find out the nutritional value of the foods that you eat. There are some good choices; it is easy to go wrong with fast food but most fast food chains offer salads these days with non fatty dressing.

How will your food be prepared? Fish and potatoes can be okay, but not if they are deep-fried.

An average fast-food meal can contain as much as 1000 calories; this can push your blood sugar level way too high. Eat a child’s meal or just eat half.

If you have a fast-food meal, eat healthy food like fruit and vegetables for the other meals that day.

If you are eating out for breakfast, eat a simple bagel or toast. If you add anything to it, it might contain a lot of sugar and fat. Drink some fat-free milk or a fruit juice with that. Eat pancakes without butter, simple scrambled eggs or cold cereal with fat-free milk. Hold back on the bacon and sausages, they are high in fat.
