Just joining the Diabetes II group. Been on other groups here.

My story started about 2 years ago. I got a really bad flu bug (they think) and ended up in the hospital. Durring the test they run they found my blood sugar was high (not extreme but enough to warrant observation), they also found that I have Chronic Renal Failure (Stage 3 at the time). I also have high blood pressure (medicated) along with a couple of other minor chronic illnesses. Anyway been seeing doctors for 2 years, Renal specialist and dietician. Blood shugar has kept me in the pre-D, until last fall. I was officially diagnosed with Type 2, A1-C @ 7.0, they still left me on diet and exercise. Good news though, renal down to stage 2 and lost 40 pounds.

Fighting the wee out of diet and exercise this winter, last 6 weeks been rough. I think I am losing the diet and exercise war! in 6 weeks I have gained 15 pounds, gone back to the always hungry always thirsty and well you know what comes with the thirst. Diet staying relatively good, but just can't get out to exercise (used to walk 3 miles a day during lunch). I get lethargic when I eat so I walk during lunch instead.

I think what they call my condition is Metabolic Syndrome... My body just does not like me!

Everything they said would fall apart when you turn 40 did!

Hey Red, welcome to the group, I too am a type two diabetic, need to lose the weight too, exercising during the winter is a hard thing to do, but you can still do it. If you have a mall near you, walk around that a few times, just don't stop in the food court, are you checking your blood sugars each day? when was the last time your doctor did a HA1C? as a diabetic we need to have those done at least 3 times a year, 4 if your control hasn't been good.

I personally don't believe in diet, diet to me means deprivation. Think of it more in terms of a change in eating habits, we have a recipe exchange group here on the diabetes two site, just click on the diabetes forum link at the top of the page, and it will take you to all the forums here, you will find medical information in the medications and tips, then plenty of recipes to get you started, you can even eat out still, most fast food places have their nutritional information in a pamphlet. That you can get there, or you can go online, like for McDonald's, they have a drag and drop menu on their website that will give you all the information on the different foods.

Eating small regular meals is important to maintaining good blood sugar numbers, and for keeping your body from feeling like it is starving to death.. If your like me, drinking water isn't a good tasting thing, lol, but they offer those little single serve drink mixes that you can use that generally have few to no calories or carbs, just read the information on the back of the box, like Earle said limit the bread, if you must have bread go for something like the Roman meal with the whole grain, helps getting the fiber in there.

If there are any questions you might have, please ask, if I don't have the answer and can't find it for you, Earle will probably have it.

Hopeful, do get something to carry with you, dropping that low is dangerous, something that will help bring you up, is the glucose tablets you can carry in your purse or pocket..one or two of those will bring you up for a little bit, but you have to get something right away to eat, a couple of small sips of regular soda or sweet tea, will work too in a pinch, but again you must eat something right away.. sugar being to high is as bad as being to low, with both you could go into a coma.. I carry my meter, and my glucose tabs with me at all times, working you don't always have the chance to get something to eat right at your appointed time, but for the most part I have found employers very understanding, even working retail.

I tend to drop out (lethargic) about 30 miniutes after eating a meal, the effects last about an hour. My sugar bounces about every 30 miniutes (at least that is when I took readings) between high and low until the 2 hour post peradial. I have done this check a couple of times. lowest I have ever seen is 50-55 and the highest I have been able to record is 150. They tell me from the A1C it is going higher than that, darn'd if I have been able to verify what time range I spike in. I also see a blood pressure drop along with the lethargy. Dietician told me it is rerouting of blood to the stomach for digestion purposes some how (dont think I described it quite the way she did, that is probably as close as I am going to get).

I am on Niacin 1000mg for triglycerides, I think it messes with blood sugar readings. I wonder if it is the reason I am having a hard time finding the spikes? By the way my triglycerides about 3 years ago were 780 last check with Niacin they were 120. I have read somewhere that triglyceride levels are related to blood sugar, not sure.

hi red welcome to the group. I'm one of those bouncy diabtics too. For years I was HYPO so I got used to my levels dropping to low and then a few years back I turned officially to diabetic. I have to be careful with what I eat for breakfast it seems if I eat a certain cearel for a while and then change cereals I will bottom out about 10:00am for two or three days until my body gets used to the new cereal. It's very weird but I always make sure I have a snack or something on the days I know I will have trouble. You are right about the triglycerides they can be directly effected by the blood sugar levels. Once you are able to control your sugars you should ask your doctor about reevaluating the need for the niacin. glad you found the forum and welcome again

Hey Red, Hey Snoopy, Red, at what times are you testing? I was taught to test before meals, and two hours after, which the countdown for that is when you take the first bite. and to test after exercise, along with doing a periodic check early in the mornings for what is called the dawn affect, checking for this is like if you get up around 2 or 3 in the morning.

Are you eating like you should be? the lethargy almost sounds like your body is going in to food shock..my husband does that a lot cause he will not eat right..either he doesn't eat but once a day or all he will eat is sugar..like candy bars and stuff..and then wonder why he crashes.. he hasn't been officially diagnosed, but his doctor has warned him he might.

Snoopy, have you cross checked the carb count in both of your cereals? one might have more or less carbs than the other. By keeping the same carb levels per serving, you should be able to stop the drops.

Have either of you been to see a dietitian? they are the ones that teach how much to eat, when to test, etc.. your insurance should cover that, and if you don't have insurance or they won't cover it, you can check with the local branch of the diabetic association, and see if they offer it.

The triglycerides, are directly related to the blood sugar control, the better your control the lower the triglycerides. I take gemfibrozil for mine. if you haven't been to the medications and tips site on this forum please check it out, I have put a lot of diabetes information there, for lack of a better place to put it..lol, if you have any information to share please do so...and include the link for where you have found it or the source of your information, we also have a recipe exchange for diabetic friendly recipes..
