Two things. First, if you are used to wearing a certain pair of shoes and then change to another, the slight difference in the height of the heel can cause leg cramps.

The other thing is Magnesium. I take Magnesium tablets when I get leg cramps and it clears up within hours. Potassium is important too, so keep eating those bananas.

Any suggestion I offer is intended as friendly advice based solely on my own experience. Please consult your doctor for professional guidance.

Thanks, haven't worn anything with a heel in decades (well at least one anyway). I spend most of my days in slippers and the shoes I wear when I do go somewhere are good flats. I will try the magnesium though.

Hello,

Walking up all those stairs may have done it especially if your body isn't use to that type of excretion. Wearing proper fitting, comfortable shoes is also important. Violett is also correct...we need the recommend dosage of magnesium and potassium in our system...too much though brings it's own problems. And there is also the possibility of dehydration...that can cause spasms, soreness and stiffness in your muscles.

If you do the step thing again, or you just start getting muscle spasms and stiffness and such in your muscles you may want to talk with your doctor. Better safe than sorry.

Take care. Keep us posted.

Hugs,

Kathleen

I saw my Doctor yesterday. (I had to drive about 45 miles through some of the worse thunderstorms I have seen in a while both going and coming and with the fibro you can imagine what a nightmare that was!) Anyway I was going to buy the magnesium while I was out but she said to wait because she wanted to check some levels first. With all the meds I am on she doesn't want to add anything else to the mix unless she has to. She said in a recent test my ketones were up but that I don't have any protein in my urine. (Which is apparently good from the way she acted.) Anyone have any ideas what that is all about. Should have asked her but I was a zombie at that point. On a good note she was happy with my A1C which was 7.1. She said that they like it under seven but this close in less than 6 months is good.

Hi Nitalynn,

I'm so glad that you went to see your doctor and that she is doing more test. That's important not only because you're on a lot of medications but because you have ketones in your urine. What exactly did your doctor say about the ketone level? It's good that there is no traces of protein in your urine because that usually means (especially in high numbers) that your diabetes is affecting your liver and/or kidneys. Not to worry though. I'm certain that your doctor would have said something if that were the case and I certain;y am not a doctor...I don't even play one on TV LOL. Please make sure you follow up with your doctor about the results of any test.

Best of luck. Keep us posted on how you're doing.

Hugs,

Kathleen

Hi Kathleen, I have had hemaria (blood in urine) after a series of kidney stones, the last one of which way 7mm and could not pass so had to be removed by going in with a basket attachment and dragging it out in the latter half of 2007. I wonder if the ketones might be related to that some way.

Hi Nitalynn,

I feel for ya. I had kidney stones one time and it was so painful.

There are quite a few reasons as to why you have ketones in your urine but severe dehydration seems to be the key for diabetics so please be sure and drink plenty of fluids.. What did your doctor recommend?

You take care and keep us posted on how you're doing,

Have a wonderful day!

Hugs,

Kathleen

I have leg cramps for most of the day and also at night. As well as Diabetes I have Myasthenia Gravis, a condition wherby I often get cramps. Most methods for relieving cramps do not work with MG and may cause severe cramping. For the 5 yrs or so I have had to avoid stairs or sitting too long as this causes my legs to cramp up. I feel for you and hope that someone somewhere can be of help.
