Hi to everyone--

My name is Caitrin.I suffer from severe refractory depression(for 20 years now.)I am almost 33. I also more recently have developed Anxiety Disorder and have become almost entirely agoraphobic. I currently feel terribly isolated, and very ashamed that I can't seem to get any better.

I joined this support group about a year ago but a death in my family and personal crisis kept me off the boards...though now after reading through the forums/ discussions here I really wish I'd stayed on! Anyway I am staying on now and I would love to meet people on here.Smile

Welcome Caitrin, I'm sorry you're going thru so much, but as you said yourself, you've come to the right place. I have gotten much support and made some friends here. I'm sure that you will also. Feel free to post, send pm's, whatever you're comfortable w/. And I hope that you feel better.

Warm, welcoming regards,

Sylvia

Welcome Caitrin! This is a great group of people! What's the specifics of severe refractory depression? It's amazing how they've broken up illnesses into more subcategories. This is a wonderful site full of caring and supportive people. No need to feel any shame here, we all have been thru this in one form or another and it is wonderful to discuss things with people who actually know. PM me anytime.
The only medical knowledge I have is my own experiences. Bretta

Hi-

Thank you so much for the welcomes!Smile

morehope2: I guess another way to describe "severe refractory depression"(my pdoc's term)is Major Chronic treatment-resistant Depression. I don't have episodes of depression so much as one long relentless bout with it.I am extremely disabled by this type of depression--I cannot work, cannot socialize, cannot function like an even nominally productive person. Many days, just getting out of bed at all is a triumph, and if I can take a shower,I feel like I deserve a gold medal! lol...But you're right, all the terminology gets confusing and it begins to sound sort of meaningless after a time as well.

Anyway, I am really glad to be here.I tend to be very shy and to read more than I post, but there are some very helpful things to read here!

Best wishes to all.

Hey Caitrin, I never heard the term refractory depression either, but I evidently have it. I used to have severe bouts of depression, but this last bout has lasted for over 15 years. And it's treatment resistant in that I can't take any of the meds because of severe reactions.

Thanks for the comment about the gold medal for showering. I thought I was the only one who felt that way. So I am really glad you posted that.

As for shame, we certainly did not ask for this disease - and make no mistake, it's a disease. Would you be ashamed if you had diabetes?

Good luck Sweetie. I hope the group can help you; I'm still depressed, but this group is keeping me going. I, too, am pretty isolated because of physical disabilities as well as the depression.

Hey, u should not feel ashamed about anything that u have. Because god made us all the way we are for a purpose, and he has a plan, so u need to fulfil ur part of the plan, and just don't doubt ur self for even a second, because for just those few seconds, u could get a lot of negativity.
