Hi all, there's a thread on the fibro group for what meds work (and don't work) for people. I have yet to find an antidepressant I can take. It occurred to me to start a med thread like the one in the fibro group, partly for selfish reasons - I'm always hoping to hear of something I haven't already tried - and partly because I'm sure the info could be helpful to others who are wondering about taking meds, need to change their meds, etc.

So if y'all wouldn't mind, please tell the rest of us what meds you're taking for depression, how they're affecting you, how long to get used to, and any other info you want to share about them.

Thank you all so much. You're a wonderful group of caring people. Smile

I take Celexa. It works very well for me. I was having dripping sweat attacks but haven't now for about a month?

I think it depends on what depression symptoms one is having and then match the meds to that.

For example, when my dad died I withdrew deeply. I stopped going anywhere...school, shopping, dining, and finally church. That was when my family became concerned.

I went to doc and he put me on Paxil. Worked very well. I was on it for 6 months.

A few years later my mom died and I couldn't be still. Maybe because she was living with me the last few months of her life and I could see her (in my mind) around the house, such as sitting in her fav chair is why I couldn't be still. I went, went, went.

My doc tried the Paxil again and it went against me. So, we tried Celexa and it worked. I took it about 6 months.

Several years later my health began failing, and depression set in. I was put back on Celexa and it is working well. We did have to up the dosage more than a year ago. I have been taking it for 3 years.

I also take Deplin...for 2 reasons. It controls my Pernicious Anemia and boosts the depression med.

I also have Xanax which I take rarely. But they are here if I need them.

There are many, many depression meds available. You must try them till you hit a winner. Just listen to your body dear. If it feels wrong, it probably is. Then talk to doc about a change.

Good luck

Hugs

Thanks to all of you. Unfortunately, Bits, I do get some listed side effects, but probably because of my fibro and my IBS, almost every medication on the market - for anything - gives me diarrhea. That even includes medications made for control of diarrhea. I have tried about 2 dozen antidepressants, and so far I'm literally allergic to Prosac and Cymbalta (broke out in a rash along w/ the diarrhea) and have had diarrhea and sometimes 'normal' side effects w/ every other. But I did recently find a pain med I can tolerate, so I keep hoping that if I hear of enough antidepressants, eventually I'll find one that I can take. And y'all are so helpful - which I greatly appreciate.

I am on Cymbalta, which of course won't help you, Syvia. I have never tried Pristiq, though. Maybe that one would help you. There are so many new ones coming out all of the time, or maybe the old MAO inhibitors would benefit you. Who knows?

Yes, Karen, I am allergic to Cymbalta, but I'm glad you've found something that works for you. I'm waiting for one to be developed that's sans certain side effects I simply will not live w/ - e.g., diarrhea (excuse my crassness, but I don't need help - and they almost always give me diarrhea even if the major side effect is the opposite); increased sweating - I sweated for 20 years (10 of them constantly literally dripping 24/7, and it's just been brought under control as a side effect of an OAB med - I do not want them back; and of course any that do the things that most of them do to me that are not necessarily listed and basically don't happen to anyone but me. I called a drug company for info on a brand new painkiller (on the market since 6/29/08), and I happened to mention that I get diarrhea from tylenol. Turned out the company was one of these J&J derivatives, and I got a request in the mail to have my doctor release my records re my negative reaction to tylenol. I'd told them this had to be 20-30 years ago. And as if I'm letting anyone into my medical files. Seems enough people can get them w/o my permission; why would I want to give them to anyone else? And to report a symptom that probably happens to one in a billion people.

Oh, re the MAOI's, apparently they can cause 'mental status changes'; been there and done that. But thanks for the sugestion; and the Pristiq side effect list looks like a laundry list for many of the problems I already have. I really need someone to come up w/ something totally different than what around now. But somebody did post one I'd heard of but didn't realize was for depression, and something about it looks different, so I shall ask my doc next week. Oh, yeah. My list of absolutely won't take it if it can... cause weight gain. I gained 100 pounds taking a tricyclic many years ago. Can't afford any more weight.

I take Lexapro 10mg and I don't have not had any side effects of it. Didn't like Paxil, forgot why was some time ago. I have IBS and GERD and my sensitive stomache has held up ok with most of them.
