and it keeps getting worse for me and my husband now. he was on uneloyment getting enough to pay the bills my parents arent paying (mind you were 30 and 33-not teens anymore). and now hes upset becausee the job isnt working out. they give him 30 days to selll life insurance. we paid for him to get the books and he tested and passed! BUT nobody seems to want to buy life insurance in this day and age. he's been getting rejected all week..its the hardest thing to sell! and now hes suicidal feeling like a failure. hE HAS A DEGREE BUT IT DOESNT MEAN GARBAGE IN THIS MARKET. PLUS WE LIVE IN AN AREA WHERE PEOPLE SPEAK A LOT OF SPANISH AND IF YOU DONT..TOO BAD FOR US, HES TRIED TO LEARN IT, REALLY HAS, BUT HE CANT. He has gotten offers for jobs but told if he spoke spanish then he would defnitely have it. Were staying wuth my parents because of their declining health. I cant just pack up and leave 2000 miles away. it seems like i might have to,,this is getting ridiculous. He doesnt even want to go to work and sell because nobody is buying. people are more interested in health insurance. ahhhh! and i have to worry about being cut open soon too,,,i think my parents will make it longer than us...

thanks for reading.

I'm sorry Mishy. It's so hard these days finding work. Even people with college degrees or been employed by a company for 20 years are loosing jobs and having trouble finding work. The employers can be choosy now as to who gets hired and I think that's why having a second language like Spanish makes a person more marketable in the work field. Of course I never finished taking Spanish, just did my 2 years that were requried. People aren't buying like they used to. Maybe he can still try to sell it or talk find out if there's another way to get people to buy. I know it's hard and people are sending out resumes like crazy, going on interviews and just want a job that will work, even if you take something for now till something else opens up. I hope it gets better for your family. Hugs, Rachele

I am so sorry that this is happening for you and him but everyone is having problems in the job markets now days and I know you just cannot abandon your parents and their health declining. Is there no where he can go take a free course in Spanish? I know here they teach it at night in classes at our library because so much is spoken here. Hun don't give up there has to be a solutions. Please know we are here for you to talk to and I will keep you guys in my prayers. Did you finish school and working now? I have missed seeing you and hope to get to talk to you more hun. hI vIV,

thanks for replying. how are you doing?im in the midst of such a bad depression right now. i just had an etopic pregnancy and i need surgery within the next month, then recovery could take 6-8weeks. so as much as id start to look for something..im very limited. i also have no motivation. its not easy learning a new language.,,nobody told me i'd miss out on jobs if i didnt know it when i was younger. my husband and myself both have 4 year degrees! to become fluent takes years!! a night course will get you by the minimum, and if there is an applicant who happens to be bilingual from a young age vs. my husband who is still new and learning it...who do you think is getting the job? plus he was more of a math guy...numbers..not words..oh i wish we could move where this isnt such a barrier!! I was born and raised here and people look at me like im crazy for not knowing spanish. since when was that a requirement??? i hate this place! i wish my parents were healthy enough so we could move the heck away!I walk in stores and am greeted in spanish! How unwanted it makes me feel!!!!! Fed up with everything! fed up with this whole stinking life!!!

I can relate sort of. I have been out of high school for five years and cannot no matter what find a job to save my life...I had two jobs, but because I have a bad learning disability where I learn at a slower pace than most other people I lost both of them in under a month. To make it worse the two jobs I did have I did not get on my own, I only got them because I knew the right people. Almost all of my friends have jobs and three of them have very long resumes and have been working since we were 16-years old and yet I have nothing at all. It's a massive blow to my pride and my self-esteem and now my girlfriend is also unemployed. For the longest time she was paying for everything which made me feel even worse because money is hard for me to come by, I felt like I just did not deserve her because I could not support her. Now that she is unemployed we're both struggling to get by in this crappy economy and there are absolutely no jobs in Philadelphia. Like you I can't just pack up and go somewhere else, my mother is sick in kidney failure and is raising my almost 9 year old sister and I'm helping her, so if I leave she won't have help. It's pretty bad. It's not exactly the same since your a bit older than I am and I'm not married, but I do understand to a point.

Thanks for replying Tom. I'm glad that you responded, I do feel like we are in similar situations. I also have a learning disability which means it takes me longer to "GET" things. Or I'll get it one day and then the next day I have forgotten most it. It bites.College was horrible, I had to read things over and over and over for them to stick. SO, whoopie, I did all that work and where did it get me? NOwherE. Im not sure I evene believe in getting a college education anymore. My husband thinks hes been turned down for jobs for being OVERqualified. They would rather hire someone who isnt as qualified, so they can pay them less, and hope that it works out with the person it seems. Anyways, thanks again for posting..its nice to see another can relate.

I try to just keep telling myself , the next year will prosper for jobs and new opportunities. Keep thinking positive, and watch the papers or I like Craigslist Jobs for your area. Found my HB after being laid off 18 months a better paying job that he had before. So there is always hope, just keep your eyes open and don't give up..

Warm wishes
