So I am going to go tour the three nursing home facilities in my area tomorrow and Thursday. I am kind of nervous as to what I will see, but at the same time, it is necessary.

Do any of you have some good questions that I can pose to the staff? I know the general stuff, but any questions that one would not think to ask unless told.

I appreciate all of the help.

Here are a sample of questions not to forget.

Do they automatically put residents in diapers when they begin their stay? They should encourage as much independance as possible.

Do they make sure the resudents get their faces wash and teeth brushed?

Do they have a dr. on call for when residents become ill or injured? Sometimes nursings homes need to be encouraged to actually treat residents by dr. after hours.

Do the scheduled activites to do and what are they?

What is the procedure in a fire?

I hope this helps. Good luck in this. I know it is hard looking. Know my thoughts will be with you.

hugs

Lori

I just got done with my last nursing home tour and I am feeling better than I have in a long time! I found the one! Of course, it would be the only one with a waiting list but the representative told me that it could be anywhere from a week to a month. After being told that it could be two years for assisted living placement, a month sounds like heaven. And of course, the first thing I do is run home to MDJunction to tell the group.

I asked all the questions and took tours of all three nursing homes in my community. The first two homes were not quite up to my expectations and both of them had completely different information concerning the Medicaid. The first woman that I talked to even told me that she had only been on the job for six months and so she wasn't quite sure about Medicaid, but if her doctor would sign a failure to thrive order that Medicare would pay for it.

The last home that I went to was extremely clean and all the residents were up and moving around. There was a full activity shedule, restaurant like dining, and it is a nonprofit and locally owned. I put her on the waiting list and the woman told me to call her back in two weeks to see how it was progressing. She also told me that she had worked there for 18 years and she was a certified Medicaid specialist, so she set me straight on all the information.

Because the winter is upon us here in Wyoming, I think that as soon as a place opens, my husband and I are going to go get her and as many belongings as we can fit in our truck. We will put the rest of it in storage in Utah and go back in April or May, once the winter is over, and move it to a storage unit up here. I still need to talk to him about this, but this seems like the most reasonable idea to me. He just called me on his lunch break to find out how the home shopping had went and I told him that I had found the one and we could talk about it over dinner.

I feel like a weight is being lifted off my shoulders and I am now praying that the transition is easy. Thank you all for your support and caring words. Know that I am here for you too.

Condy, that sounds really good. When my Great Aunt was in a nursing home over 10 years ago, they had a list of activities posted on several bulletin boards so the residents and their family/friends would easily know what was scheduled for the whole month and could join in OR the family could decide to NOT take their loved one on an outing that day if it was their loved one's birthday party celebration at the nursing home. They had birthday parties, sing alongs, games and good activities.
