After suffering from terrible nausea/heartburn/indigestion for weeks I started to take pepto quite regularly with so-so results for it.

Now my crohn's mostly resides in my colon so I dont think it's the cause of my upper GI problems, but since I started taking the pink stuff my lower GI issues have all but disappeared although it does turn your stool blackish and that worried me at first till I saw it was a side-effect of the pepto.

Anyone know of any long-term complications from taking this? The directions say not to take it for more than two weeks. I prefer the liquid form but take the chewables more often since a box of those are much cheaper in the long run.

BTW, no doctor will see me since I cant pay so "ask your Dr." suggestions will be ignored.

There are doctors that will see you without insurance. Check your county health department. The only thing that keeps people from this care is pride. Pepto-Bismol will not solve anything.

My doctor prescribed Pepto for the heartburn and mild acid reflux I experience from the sulfasalazine I'm on for my Crohn's. Until I read starshine's post, I didn't realize it could be dangerous- I researched it and couldn't find aspirin (or any NSAID) as an inactive ingredient, BUT there is a general warning for the pink stuff for those with bleeding disorders (which I have). My doctor wanted me to take it 3 times per day, every day, indefinitely- but I wasn't comfortable doing that, and now only take it as needed. I've been on it for about a month with no apparent negative consequence. Also, I'd like to echo kildare's suggestion of seeking subsidized medical care. I've been in the financial position before of not being able to afford medicine, much less a doctor's visit, but found several very inexpensive resources, including clinics that offer deeply discounted rates based on your income (sliding fee scale).

bla bla bla....When I did seek medical care from my state I was denied medical assistance and made appt with the local "free clinic" and told not to show up unless I pay 70 dollars up front. It's always the same ol song n dance here, you guys dunno my story, what I've already tried and failed at. America isnt a good place to be sick n broke, the system is made to kill you.

Thank you Starshine for answering my question without preaching at me

Big difference between preaching and trying to help someone. Please don't forget that this is a public forum, and if our response to you doesn't help YOU specifically, it might help others. Good luck in your endeavor to treat your Crohn's.

We dunno yer story? I know yer story and it's a rerun. Of course you like star's answer it requires no work on your part beyond what you are already.

There are a lot of people in this group with greater or lesser degrees of the disease. And, everyone of us would be there for someone it trouble. Excuse me for not snapping to attention for the pepto-boy. You can always find another group.

LOL...Kildare!!!!I don't have insurance either.I was denied medical assistance too...I have to jump through alot of hoops, but i do get to the dr and I do get my medicine I need.It is VERY frustrating at times, and i have cried, screamed and cussed out some poor lady on the phone that had nothing to do with my problem....But if you are desperate enough, you don't give up.There is always someone out there willing to help.Pepto is probably a quick fix, to a long term problem. If the label says don't take it for more than 2 weeks...then i would follow that order. They wrote it on there for a reason!Good luck DBreeze AKA Pepto-boy....LOL...sorry, I am dying laughing here...LOL!!!!!
