Hi all,

My 8 yr old son just got diagnosed this morning. We've suspected for a week now it was Crohns, but it didn't take the shock away when it was confirmed. Just wanted to know if any parents have a diet they follow with their kids with Crohns.

We know our son can't have ANY red sauce, tomatoes or citric as that was one of the triggers in the past. I know it varies with each child but any diet advice would be great.

Thanks,

Eyke

all my warmest welcomes, Eyke. I am sorry your son as been diagnosed with Crohn's. One good thing is now that he is diagnosed, you can better control his symptoms. I don't have a child, but I am sure you will find quite a few moms on the site in your position and will get the answers you are looking for. Did the doctor give a list of do's and dont's?? I hope all is well and if you need anything, I am here..

Hugs and welcome Eyke! So sorry to hear your young son has been diagnosed with crohns. We have Moms here that are trying to find support for themselves as well as information on what to eat and not along with tons of other questions. Its all trial and error for most of us. I know I avoid the red sauces and spicy and fried foods. Just too much for my stomach. There is also a site created by ccfa for children and teens with crohns, www.ucandcrohns.org that has some very good articles that may help you understand some of the things your son will be dealing with. I hope we can all make you feel welcome and we hope your son is on the road to recovery. Hang on and stay strong for him. Glad you joined us. Smile

There is no specific diet. It all depends on his stabilization and his crohns, personally i drink citric stuff and even eat pizza at times and nothing happens at all. Although since your son have just gotten diagnosed he must not be stable at all at this point so just avoid the stuff you just mentioned and nothing greasy, oily, spicy etc. As time goes on your son will develop his own diet by himself and with your help ofcourse as he experiments on what food goes good and what doesn't ALWAYS ask him how he feels after every meal since he's still young.

Good Luck

Hey there, I have a daughter that is 11 who was diagnosed in Dec. When she has flare ups she is told to stay away from fiber. I know dairy is also a trigger for her. So sorry that your son has to go through this (and you too). I know how hard it is.

So sorry 2 hear about your son. I have a 13 yo daughter that was dx'd 7/08, i know how it feels when they r going thru flare-ups and can't help them. She is no special diet, GI said she would figure that out on her own. Some1 I know had read that a glutent-free diet helps people with Crohns. We have not tried it, it is a very hard diet 2 follow. Good luck with everything and every1 on here is very helpful and informative and definetly visit the website Libit suggested alot of kid things on there!

that is such a young age to get diagnosed, even if kids younger than 8 do get diagnosed. along with the things that you've said, I've been told that; popcorn, corn & pizza aren't good. along with peanuts, and a lot of chocolate isn't good either.

I'm 24 and I was diagnosed at the age of 13. It is very hard to go through and I am terribly sorry that your son was diagnosed so young. My best advice is that if he is going thrrough a biig flare to try a low residue diet. A low residue diet will allow his digestive system to relax and not work so hard to digest things like beef and pizza. It has helped me so far. I do hope your son gets better. May God bless you both and guide you through the disease.
