Hello fellow Crohnies,

I was just wondering if some of you would be so kind to share what your diet consists of? I realize that everyone is different, but I just would like a general idea of what people are eating, tolerating and not tolerating so well.

Today was a bad day infused with aches and pains all over and mouth sores that are really killing me tonight. I only ate once, late in the day, I've been okay since (as far as a trip to the bathroom, but the rest of the day I can't say the same), but I still would like to know what people are doing out there.

Thank you so much!

Olivia

I can only tell you what I have heard works. But take in mind that each case of Crohn's can be different in that certain areas or all the areas of the G.I. tract can be affected. In general I would give your system somewhat of a rest with food. Stay away from dairy products, fried foods, red meat, which is hard to digest. I would look for a non-dairy liquid supplement. Also there is a prescription called "majic mouthwash" that works great. In addition to this, I would avoid coffee, sodas. And one of my concerns is your "aches" you describe. I am wondering if you may not be tolerating your medicine very well. Anyway, I hope this helps.

Thanks alot. I am waiting for a doctor to call me from a Crohn's Clinic in Boston at the Massachusetts General Hospital so I can get in there and see one of their specialists. I had the majic mouthwash prescribed to me when I first got the sores and they thought this was just a "virus". It eased the pain for a while but never got rid of the sores. Thanks again!

when ever I have a flair up I have to go on completely high calorie liquid diet because of one of the locations of my Crohnes. It will not let my stomach empty. Luckly dairy products do not bother me, so do alot of milk shakes with carnation insta breakfast mixed in, jello, soups etc.. Been doing it for two weeks now and had to for 5 months last summer, gets kind of boring. But it works for me. My main problem is that I loss so much weight rapidly that I really have to go to it, it is a all day chore keeping me in enough calories to servive.

Harrison,my son is on Clarithromycin,Mycobutin, and Levaquin. Even though alot of docs don't subscribe to the MAP theory(yet), they do prescribe antibiotics for this. The way I look at is all of the meds have side effects that we are taking for this condition. If one thing doesn't work, try something else. The success rate with mainstream treatment is 30%. Antibiotic treatment Over 50%. But it has to be the right ones. Not Flagyl or Cipro. I have a website by the way with at least most of this information offered. cureforcrohns.weebly.com. Oh by the way Harrison is doing great and we never tried the mainstream treatment.

I'm having a horrible flare, for 6 weeks now. I eat toasted frozen waffles (2) with peanut butter for breakfast. Chicken soup or white bread with chicken and mustard for lunch, and steamed chicken or something like it for dinner. I snack on plain crackers or animal cookies. Anything else seems to make me sick. Sometimes I can eat stew or pot roast with soft veggies. I just discovered Odwalla drinks which seem to have lots of nutrients, particularly the carrot juice.

It seems to me that all of us are different, you have to experiment with different things, but you have to be willing to spend a little time with the toilet in order to do so. I right now am supposed to be on a clear liquid diet, but as I am the cook in my family it would be cruel and unusual punishment to stick on the straight and narrow. Just start with bland easy digestable foods to start and see how it effects you and progress from there. But if you are unsure ask you doctor for help.

Sharon,

I have been in a flare for about 8 weeks now (first diagnosed in February) and have been finding homemade chicken salad is good and any kind of chicken and I just bought some animal crackers last week. Right now I am in the throws of my mouth being so flared up with ulcers it's excruciating so anything soft is what I like to eat, hence the chicken salad. Somedays I can eat something with a little more "girth" to it, the pain seems to worsen in the evening and early morning hours. It's the worst thing ever. Thanks for your insight and suggestions. It is greatly appreciated.

Hey Jay,

I completely know what your saying about being the cook in the family and it just sucks to have to eat differently then everyone else especially when you want to enjoy everything that you used to enjoy (well at least myself, this is all so new to me) but your right, it is cruel and unusual punishment! Thanks for your suggestions as well. I really do appreciate it. This whole thing stinks, no pun intended!

Hi Olivia,

Sorry to hear you in so much discomfort /hug

I've been flaring for the last 6 months and I'm pretty much down to a liquid diet right now with fruit and such as a supplement. This isn't actualy as bad as it sounds - I eat a lot of really good soup (I make mine, the canned stuff makes me bloat horribly), lots of fruit smoothies, and this is the best excuse evar for a milkshake - right?
