MDJunction to me

MissNikkiAnn"When you have an illness with the name "Non-Familial Dysautonomia" (a name that most people, and even doctors, have never heard of), you need a network
of people who understand the name and the symptoms/issues that come with it.
MDJunction led me to that network of people during a very confusing and sickly time. For this I am thankful. And for this reason I try my best to give back to other members the same care and help that I received through MDJunction.

Yesterday my sister called me to tell me that she had been out to dinner with a friend and when they asked how I was doing she had told them that I recently had been diagnosed with Crohn's. Her friend instantly said "Oh my god that is terrible" My sister had no clue why she would say this so her friend explained that she has another friend who has the disease and last year they had 7 inches of their colon removed. My sister called me and said "I didn't know it was something serious. I just thought you got diarreha every now and then." What? I said yes it is very serious and I then explained the disease and its effects to her and she said "Oh, I had no clue it was that serious." It is amazing that people can think that it is nothing and simple. I thought to myself, why does she think that I have been going to the doctor once a month for the past month and have been so sick for the past year and a half. I just found it so amazing that I had to share this story with people who would understand.

Maybe you should tell your sister to check out the support group and see what you are going thru. People really don't understand. Its not diarrhea. My best friend that I grew up with has really got on my last nerve. When I told her that I had to have surgery because of the abcess she said well at least they can cure it with antibiotics. Yes, that is correct but you know how many surgeries I've had, the daily pain I suffer, the leaks I can have with this colostomy. I would be willing to bet everything I have she would never be able to deal with it. I think I have really lost her as a best friend. She is a little to self centered to actually comprehend what this disease does to us. So I will not include her in my life where this disease is concerned. Really don't feel much of a loss either.
People cry not because they are weak..but because they have been strong for so long.....

It's always horrible that some of the people who are supposed to be there for you take off when the going gets tough simply because they are to stubborn to try to understand something that doesn't physically affect them. I try to stay positive and upbeat but some days it is so hard not to be angry.

How true it is all these people and doctors don't understand what we go through with this disease even though as much as we try to explain it to them. And also it seems like all your friends and family are ok with the disease when you have a good day and feel like aa normal person but then when you get sick and don't feel like doing anything or get stuck in the hospital there is no one around!
