I am a 40yo mother of 2 (ages 17 and 12).

I had a life long history of dizzy spells and intermittent chest pains (put on nitroglycerin at age 16 - only took for about 4 or 5 years and those medical records cannot be located so do not know specific dx).

One night almost 9 years ago, I had a seizure as dx by paramedic and ER Dr but subsequently to by Neurologist no seizures.

A few months after that I woke up with numbness in my left hand that progressed up my arm, I later became nauseated, and parts of my face went numb. Called Dr and was refered to ER. Waited over 3 hours to be triaged, told they needed to do CT to rule out Stroke and was sent to the waiting room to wait for another 3 to 4 hours. Didn't do a CT only took blood and gave IV wide open. Discharged and told my potasium was low due to vomit and diareha...I had neither. Couldn't stand unless I walked real fast and when I had to stop to open the door to leave ER area, legs collapsed and I hit floor.

Over next few months, had increase of numbness and tingling mainly on left side.

Continued to progress over the years to multiple symptoms including partial paralysis episodes. Symptoms mimick so many conditions that cannot pinpoint specific. Have been told it is either one very rare disease or multiple diseases/conditions that are eluding tests. Won't rule out MS but can't confirm.

I have been DX with, To name a few conditions:

Rheumatic Fever as child

Neurocardiogenic Syncope

Asthma

B-12 Deficiency

Fibromyalgia-like-syndrome

Narcolepsy

Sleep apnea

Neuropathies

Hypohydrosis

Intermittent Arrytrhmia

Cognative disfunction

depression

Unspecified Neuropathic Disease or disorder of autonamic nervous system (cannot confirm dx)

Bowel/rectum muscles do not function properly but do not remember dx term

Lesions on liver

cyst on kidney

trace Mitral and Tricuspid Regurgitation and Aortic insufficiency

balance disorder

arthritus in spine with buldging/protruding discs and tear in one of the discs.

Dr convinced me to have hysterectomy last year as a result of chronic nausea and abdominal and pelvic pain (had lost 20lb in 1 month, and another 20 over the next 3 to 4 months). The only thing they could find was tumors on my uterus. After that, I had complications with bladder and increased problems with bowels and digestive system. Urologist told me if there is indeed a disorder of autonamic nervous system, that would cause most if not all of the symptoms that led to the hysterectomy....can you say Freak out frustration???

I am having problems with dr's playing games over what meds to take. One will put me on a med and then the other will take me off that and put me on something else.

My problem is that everytime something new comes along or I feel that I am sick, the Dr just blows it off as being part of this unknown mysterious disease.

I see a Neurologist, Neuro-opthalmologist, Pain Management Dr, Gastro-interologist, sub specialized Gastro-interologist, etc. I have been through to many tests to count.

I am on the following RXs:

Fentanyl

Vicodine (every third day of Fentanyl patch)

Metanx (for B-12 deficiency)

Topamax (for neuropathic pain)

Zocor (for Cholesterol)

Baby Aspirin

Transderm Scopolamine (for nausea)

Welbutrin Xl (for Depression)

Cymbalta (for depression and pain)

Nasonex

Albuterol

Advair

Lidoderm patches

Azopt (eyes)

Yes I have asked if I am over medicated and they just keep adding/changing meds....

Current Drs will even disagree over Test results. For instance, nerve conduction studies....3rd set I had done probably 4 years ago were worse than the first 2 sets that were done, showed actual neuropathies but Neurologist said that they would only rely on the 1st on done 3 or 4 years before that because it was done by an actual neurologist and the last one was done by a technician that does nothing but Nerve conduction studies. My argument, if you were not looking for progression, why would you re-do the tests? Only one EEG and latest stress echo showed abnormalities. Each Cardiologist said 1st EEG must have been done wrong because their's come back as normal.

I would love to find a Dr in the Dallas TX area that would start fresh, take a look at the full picture and see what might be able to be done.

Any advise/support will be appreciated.

Thank you Suzee. Being that I pour myself into my work, seems to be one of the only things that I do that takes me into another world where I don't think about any of this mess, I don't have a lot of time to come to places like this but am so glad that I found y'all.

Is there a teaching hospital in your area that has a really good reputation? I would hope as big as Dallas is that there would be, but I am not that familiar with your area. Anyway if there is a teaching hospital I might try to get someone over there to take your case (any of those specialties) and if they feel the need to get other specialists to advise ask them if they can get people they already work well with to work on your case so maybe you can avoid the doctors fighting over what to do with you.

If they would talk amongst themselves I think it would help your situation tremendously. They would not be forever prescribing and unprescribing each others meds. Also if you had one doctor who was acting as your primary with every one esle advising you would know who is really in charge. I hope this helps. You are in what sounds like a terrible situation with all the doctors thinking they are the primary and acting accordingly. Do they talk to each other at all? I know it takes more paperwork for you to fill out and more work on their part to talk to each other but since you aren't improving some one needs to start talking. If you have one that you like best maybe request all the others to send your medical records to that one (hint to them that they are no longer your primary). Then that one at least will be working from a full picture. If that one happens to be new then it is even a clear slate and a full picture. Best of luck to you. Let us know how things go. Mary

Well, I'm glad you found us too and please remember one thing...

YOU CAN WORK!!!

A lot of us here can't, myself being one! But, I do know that back when I could work, it did take my mind off of a lot of things. Especially when I was having a bout with depression. It got my mind off of things, so you're very lucky that you CAN work and DO have that one "out".

Take care and keep in touch when you can~

Thank you MaryR. I spent 2 weeks at the Mayo Clinic and they were stumped. I asked my Primary about coordinating with my other Dr and she told me that the other Drs need to talk to each other....I have to schedule a follow-up mri with Baylor Liver Transplant center and am going to ask their advice about whether there is a program there where the Drs will confer with each other to try and figure things out. So many times I feel like I am just money in the bank to Drs.

SweetheartSuzee, No offense but I work because aside from the fact that I know that I feel a lot worse if I am laying/sitting around the house, I do what I have to to take care of my girls. Thanksgiving a few years ago, I ended up going to my office for a while because I felt so bad. After about an hour of working, I was so engrossed in what I was working on that I forgot about how bad I felt. That is until I quit and went back home. When I was off for a couple of months this past year recovering from complications from a hysterectomy that it turned out I didn't need (they convinced me that because they could not find any other cause for the nausea, abdominal and pelvic pain that I needed a hysterectomy - I was not having female problems but they did find a couple of tumors on my uterus) I thought I was never going to be able to go back to work. Laying/sitting around feeling sorry for myself just made things that much worse. I have had 3 different doctors suggest filing for LTD but there is no way that I could make ends meet. I have to keep my insurance and a roof over my girls' heads. I am very fortunate that my employeer has been very, very understanding. I am able to go into the office a little later in the morning and if I need to lay down and take a nap that is ok too (of course none of that time is claimed as work time). About 4 to 5 years ago, my Dr restricted my driver's license. My employeer came to me with the offer to work from home 3 days a week and come into the office 2 days a week. They even provided me transportation to and from home the days that I went into the office (I live 30 miles from my office). Then when I went back to working 5 days in the office, I would walk up to 2 miles to the bus park and ride and my employeer then allowed a staff member to come in late so that they could pick me up at the train or bus station (the City I work in does not have mass transit so I could only get to the outskirts by bus or train). Eventually, I was given permission to drive again.

I don't know if you have ever had a spinal tap or mylogram done but on 2 seperate occasions, I developed spinal fluid leaks that resulted in spinal headaches. If you haven't ever had one, you do not know what Hell is. The only thing that makes it anywhere near bearable is to lay down to take the pressure of your brain off the top of your spinal cord. The dr said that they could have pumped me full of morphine and that would not have taken away the pain. I took my daughter and her friend shopping with that headache. Then I went to the hospital for them to do the blood patch. Many days, if you were to walk in my office you would not get a good impression as I sit in my chair with my feet in it with my thights against my stomach/chest just to deal with the pain, nausea, etc.I could go on and on but don't want to offend anyone by making it sound like because I choose to push myself past all limits that they should too. I know that there are some who are not able too. Don't get me wrong, there are somedays when I wish I could just disappear.

Anyway, My intent is not to offend anyone but I felt the need to let you know that where you feel I am lucky that I CAN and DO work (it is call survival-the momma bear does what she has to to protect/take care of her cubs)....you are the lucky one because you can survive without working.
