I have been in a relationsip with my girlfriend with bipolar disorder for about 10 months now. She was just recently diagnosed, and is taking medication to cope with the illness. With the highs and lows, sometimes I am unsure if they are due to our relationship or they are part of the illness or both. I try to be as compassionate as I can, but sometimes it is difficult, because I feel like my feelings are not being addressed. This is a confusing time for me. If anyone has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Hi jgosh...

I can totally get that you and your girlfriend would be

confused at this time. It'a a brand new diagnosis of a

complicated condition, and it's normal and completely

understandable to feel confused.

I would suggest that you learn as much as you can about

bipolar. For starters, David Miklowitz MD's book, The

Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide is excellent, as is

Jim Phelps MD's book Why Am I Still Depressed? I

would also recommend BP magazine, found at www.bphope.com.

You are not alone in this... the ups and downs are

part of the bipolar condition.

I'm glad you're here- Welcome!@!!!
