Hello my name is Adam and I am from southeastern Massachusetts. I would like to seek some online support of anybody who possibly could help me.. I was recently in a near death car accident which has changed my life forever.. I was in East Providence Rhode Island when te accident occured and was hospitalized in Intesive Care for quite some time. I had a acetabular fracture (fracture of the hip), a crushed spleen and underwent blood and plasma transfusions as well as respiratory therapy and blood clot removal. I am young, merely 19 years of age and I will never be the same person again. The accident has woken me up to the fact that life can be over at any and every second and I am currently dealing with an unbearable amount of anxiety and depression especially thinking of the feeling of death that overcame me lying on the ground after the accident, thinking i would never see my friends or family ever again.. Someone with any advice please help me!

Adam

Hi Adam, I think you are brave for seeking help to deal with your anxiety and depression because a lot of people can tend to keep those feelings inside. I know that I had kept a lot of my depressed feelings inside for a while that have come with my headache syndrome/disorder, but keeping it inside wasn't going to help me get any better. You're doing the right thing by addressing it

I would suggest talking to someone professionally about what you are feeling who has experience with helping people who have dealt with similar issues. Hopefully there will be other people on the site who can give advice too, but I would strongly suggest getting the name of a therapist in your area. If you have insurance, the insurance company may be able to make suggestions/look up therapists for you over the phone or via their website.

Keep your head up, and I am very happy to hear that you made a great recovery Joanna

Welcome, Adam, I'm also glad that you decided to come forward and talk about your feelings. Do you also talk to your friends/family about how you felt then, and how you're feeling now, or these are just the first steps?

You haven't mentioned much about your current health state. Did they remove your spleen? How's your hip? Can you walk normally?

I was also in a car accident, some seven years ago. It was very mild, I wasn't hurt, but for years I wasn't comfortable riding in a car, and I was under the impression that all cars will come crushing straight on me. It was irrational, and I knew it, but this is how I felt. I thought this will never change, I thought I'm gonna carry this anxiety with me forever, but here I am, not afraid of the incoming cars anymore, feeling normal, confident again. Excuse me for comparing our two experiences, I know that you've been through hell, while I was just a little shaken, but it was traumatic for me as well, from a psychological point of view, and my experience is that times wipes it out, to a lesser or greater extent.

There are professionals that deal exactly with this, like Joanna said. People are in therapy for much less than this, after a traumatic experience. Did you get any counsel at all during your recovery?

And yes as far as my current condition they did remove my spleen surgically and placed and pined my hip into place. I am undergoing tremendous amounts of pain in my hip and I am also concerned with the use going up and up of the Percocet.. I have very recently been able to start walking again which makes me feel great. But the pain along with the life change depressiona dn anxiety attacks are bringing me down.. i just really wish there was somone to help me you know? I really appreciate your time and effort and applaud u for making me feel better like someone does care.

Hey Adam...I know exactly where your "head" is at...when I laying in bed..in a full upper body cast...after my 3rd back surgery...I really thought my life was was basically over....at that time they we're giving so many meds... it was crazy...at one point.. i gave all my narcotic drugs to my wife..for the fear that i was going "to do myself in"...like you, i was depressed and had big time anxiety...but...i hung in there and it took a while...i'm talking... years...to finally realize life is worth living....i know it sucks to be laying around in pain but i'm telling ya...it does get better...your a young guy...you have your whole life to live, man...don't throw it away...sure it isn't easy but then again "life" isn't easy....go to your doctors//do your therapy..ext////////--i know your bummed out and maybe a phychiatrist could help ya...shop around too...if you don't feel comfortable with a certain doctor...move on...the phone book is packed with clowns...some good..some are a complete joke...and remember...you are the patient..some of these doctors are treating people like "customers" now.....they don't give two shits..they just want your money...So....basically my advice is...take this hand that was dealt to you and play it...dive in head first...with that brain of yours that "still works"...You can get thru this Adam...it may take years and years..but you can do it...and in ten years when your kids are opening their presents on Christmas morning...you'll be glad you did....good luck brother....Jerseybing
