Is it old fashioned to want a family doctor who you see first for health issues who then refers to specialists as needed? My mother in Tennessee was a patient of the doctor who delivered her. When he retired, his nephew became her doctor. I cannot imagine such a close relationship. I've been living in San Diego for over 15 years and have never, ever seen the same doctor twice. I've been lucky to have good health for most of my life, but now I am beginning to have some issues and I need a good doctor just right for me and my shadow (as they say.) Where is a good source in San Diego to find the right doctor for a person's particular needs? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks friends

I don't think it's old fashioned, but, as the communities grew and became less united, and as the medical branches became more and more numerous and specialized, the concept of "the community doctor" faded over the time. It's very desirable to have a doctor that knows you, and knows all your problems well, and can make an asessment having the overall picture, gathered in years of taking care of you, sort of a Doctor Quinn, good at everything, humane and close... but when general practitioners now care for hundreds of patients that come and go all the time, and they're not able to get to know them all, or get a strong grasp of their medical history, the "my doctor" idea has become more or less limited to an episode, rather than a lifetime. There are, of course, exceptions. But they're more and more rare... It's not old-fashioned, though it belongs to the past.

From my experience, word-of-mouth is the best way to know a good doctor. Don't know anything of San Diego, though, but I think that you're the one that should be the doc's shadow now, and not the other way around. You're the one that should seek the doctor's attention all the time, and stick to him, the doctors now don't chase patients anymore with the fish oil spoon...

I was hoping that there would be a forum source with discussions/posts by people from like a local zipcode discussing there feelings and experiances with the local doctors. I have not found any site home to this level of localized discussion sorted out by zipcodes etc. If such a thing exists please share.

I believe I have seen from time to time area specific links appear in the header areas.

I agree though, having something area specific on doctors sympathetic to Fibromyalgia would be a gold mine indeed. Perhaps a survey of sorts that could be executed to all doctors to have access to placing themselves as a Fibro-sensative doctor would be one way to go. No doubt, the more ideas, the better.

Thank you for your post. Would you mind sharing what location you are looking?

I'm trying to find an excellent abdominal surgeon, my husband had emergency surgery about 8 years ago, (his instestine ruptured) and from that surgery he had about 5 more due to hernias, now he needs another one, we are new to the Houston area, and i'm terrified he might fall into the wrong hands, any suggestions on how to find a good surgeon?
