MDJunction to me

aTinaL"To me, Mdjunction comes down to motivation. The support and information I have found here motivated me to take a very proactive stance regarding my illness. This led me to find medication and doctors that are giving me my life back.
More important than even the motivation, though, is the friendship I have found at MDJ. I have made some of the best friends of my entire life right here in this group. Even though most of us have never met, it feels as if we have known each other for years.
If Angels walk among us, and I believe that they do, most of them are here at MDJ.

Hello, I am a 26 year old male and have had a pretty long history with drug abuse, but turned to heavy alcohol drinking about 5 years ago. I would drink 20oz or more of hard liquor 3-4 times a week.

About a year ago I went in for an unrelated check up and had elevated liver enzymes and an enlarged liver, the doctors assured me that it was merely fatty liver and that it is not a serious condition. Fast forward to december of last year and I begin to get pains in my upper right abdomen after heavy drinking. I stop for 2 weeks, the pain subsided and stupidly I continued drinking. This cycle went on for another 5 months until I finally got the sense to quit.

I was feeling like I was getting better but then 3 weeks after I stopped I got some pretty serious pain in my liver and nausea, along with the sort of drugged, foggy mental state, I also started having some serious insomnia at this point. This filled me with intense fear and so I began researching cirrhosis and fibrosis on the internet and come upon hepatic encephalopathy. I went to the doctor and got blood tests and an ultrasound. The results came back yesterday and all the blood tests were normal and the ultrasound says 'mild diffuse increased echogenicity of the liver which probably reflects fatty infiltration or other diffuse hepatocellular process.' I told the doctor about my foggy mental state, but she assured me that my liver did not have the kind of damage that would lead the hepatic encephalopathy. I am very scared and don't know what to think, I haven't been sleeping much at all and my doctor and family are trying to reassure me by saying that it's just stress and being tired. Someone please help me.

Is your doctor a hep doc? If not, I would get a referral to one for their thoughts.

No, It is my general practitioner. I am afraid that I have completely ruined my life and I can't concentrate on anything, my thoughts are constantly filled with what I have done to myself and how I feel so terrible.

My husband was diagnosed in November 2010 and has not yet seen a Hepatologist BUT I don't feel his GI is specialized enough. If you can see a Hepatologist easy enough, I'd suggest getting a referral.
God is good and I am glad

I am not a medical personnel. I share what I have learned through family and personal experiences along with searches that I have done of the Internet.

Welcome Brogin. Sometimes we get a good enough scare thrown into us that we can make changes before it is too late. You have been given that chance. Please read through the posts and you will see that many that had alcoholic cirrhosis did stop the progression of their disease when they stopped alcohol and drugs. Your ultrasound would have should cirrhosis so you are really a lucky young man right now. Seize this opportunity and get well.

Never hurts to get a second opinion.

In terms of alcohol and liver damage, if the damage is not too bad, once the toxin -- alcohol -- has been removed, the liver can sometimes repair itself. If this is the case, you may not have any problems in the future.
