Has anyone had trouble with nose bleeds all of a sudden? Very bright red blood stops and starts all day long also coughs up blood is that from the nose bleeds? after swallowing all that blood. My husband is scaring me what is happening I know this happens when you have cirrhosis but does that mean he is getting worse?

Alicia,

Nose bleeds are one of the hallmarks of Cirrhosis.

AS the platelets drop , the INR increases. Spontaneous bleeding occurs. And yes the spitting up blood after the nose bleed is usually from the drainage in the back of the throat.

It most certainly can be a sign of decompensation. One of the blood test used to determine the MELD score is his INR if it has increased his score would be higher. Also the CTP score would also increase with a higher INR.

ANY new symptoms should be reason to contact his Dr. ESPECIALLY bleeding.

My husband has been having occasional nose bleeds too. They don't last but a few minutes. So far he's not been coughing up any blood, but unless the fluid builds around his lung he doesn't cough at all, thank goodness. It seems like every day brings something new and scarey. I guess all any of us can do is pray for each other.

Gail & Littlepea,

Thanks for the response. If there anything they can do for the nosebleeds if he goes to the doctor? He hates for me call the doctor sometimes I am not sure it's worth the fight since the doctor usually says that there isn't anything that can be done. Then he just gets moe depressed which depresses me more too. It is like a revolving door that we are stuck in. But thanks for the info I will call the doctor if it continues.

alicia,

I use a over the counter saline nasal spray. I haven't asked my Dr. But it does help some. I know we're to avoid salt but I use it any way its my litle Devil.

Gail,

Why would my husband get a backache all the time? Do you think that is has anything to do with his cirrhosis?

Alicia,

There are a lot of reasons that can cause back pain.

1) the pressure from ascites , Enlarge liver , spleen

2) gallstones cause pain upper right back

3) osteoporosis common with cirrhosis

4) degenerative disk disorder, after 40 we all have some disk degeneration

5) Some can be very serious such as aorta stenosis

You should ask his Dr. No one should be in pain
