MDJunction to me

cinderella"MDJunction to me is a life saver... when i first was diagnosed with Scheuermann's Disease i wrote a message to a page i found on google, hoping that they could help me.... you'd never know it but that weird feeling (you know that one where it feels like someone actually cares) came over me when i opened my email next day to find that someone on the other side of the world (at the American Medical Library)had read my message while i was sleeping, and there low and behold was the address to MDJunction.... well it is everything to me, i live it breathe it and love it!!!!! I have found many people who are struggling with similar issues banding together to help each other. It is the best place in the world, and i couldn't think of another place to go to meet so many lovely people....

I'm sorry to vent. I am having a terrible time.

My Dad is still in skilled nursing. For the past week and a half he has been doing much better, since we got him off all pain meds. Yesterday morning a new nurse was on and decided to give him a pain pill.. he slept all day and was throwing up. Now this morning my younger sister gets a call from a nurse saying he is unresponsive and recommends hospice care? Never once has this been mentioned to us. in fact he is supposed to be having a back procedure on Thursday to make his back pain go away.. no more pain meds needed.. and now this? Why does it have to be this way? I am stuck at work and can't leave.

gosh, so sorry you are going through this. Can you call the doc and see what they say? They have to approve/order hospice for a patient. You and your family are in my positive thoughts.

I believe hospice care is started when one chooses to do nothing more to extend their life. The sooner hospice is started, the better 'end of life' treatment is.

If your father intends to fight longer, then hospice is not appropriate.

Getting the surgery for pain is NOT against hospice rules. My husband is getting a nerve stimulator implanted if the test for it goes well.

God is good and I am glad

I thought it was weird that this nurse suggested hospice care. I am assuming it is a new nurse or something? I am pretty sure he went into yet another HE episode because the pain meds. My Mom said he was throwing up his lactulose yesterday, which would explain it. I am just so angry I could scream, and being stuck at work does not really help.

Every time a client calls, I want to be like.. "I dont really care, I have more important stuff on my mind" Blah! This stinks

Hey tooootsie!

I wrote a piece on hospice care a while back. It is one of my diary entries http://www.mdjunction.com/diary/my-story-20/hospice-or- palliative-care-what. Hospice care does NOT necessarily mean the end is near, if that is one of your concerns. It can be a very useful way for caregivers to have qualified care for their loved one. It does need to be "prescribed" by a doctor for insurance purposes. I hope this link gives you a better idea of what hospice care really means!

Dennis is right, sometimes we will put a patient on Hospice to get them over a hump in a disease process. It gives the patient more one on one care since our staff's hands are full with the other patients. It just ensures care is at optimal levels.

Pallitive <sp?> seems to be more fitting in this situation. Hospice seems like 6 months or less to live. Unless things got drastically worse.. that is not the case.

Just spoke with my Sis and the Doc came in and my Dad is now in IV and oxygen. The center is going to watch him for 8 hours and if he still doesnt wake up he will be admitted to the hospital.. again Sad They are running labs for ammonia and sodium levels. It just blows me away that one lil pain pill could do this to him. We had everything figured out... Geeze that nurse.. I could beat her up right now.

He is being transported to the ER, per her hepa's request. Labs are too slow at the facility and they need to get everything figured out quick. I am sure he will be put in Xifaxan to help at the hospital. <sigh> I wish I could just leave work.

I guess they are going to just admit him to the hospital, so instead he is staying at the facility until the labs are back. Since labs in the hospital are slower than the ER? Weird. My sister told me he has a feeding tube right now to give him his lactulose. Sad He will not wake up.. today is a tough day.
