I received a notice this morning that the Organ Procurement Transplant Network (OPTN), the organization responsible for maintaining, implementing and auditing (enforcing) the United Network for Organ Sharing's (UNOS), the private, non-profit organization that manages the nation's organ transplant system under contract with the federal government, policies, has completed a major initiative to rewrite the OPTN policies in plain language and to organize them logically. I just read thru Policy 10: Allocation of Livers and it is thousands of percent better than the previous policy statement document!!! A great read!

Hey Booky!

You're right! The document I posted about is not something that a cirrhosis patient (or caregiver) needs to know when dealing with cirrhosis. My desire for information includes how the organ donation and allocation works. This information helps to understand why the waiting time is what it is, how exception points to MELD/PELD are "awarded" and how "they" determine who gets a liver that may become available.

I do now but probably wouldn't just a few years ago. I am a former techie so I became accustomed to reading mumbo-jumbo. Now I can read thru medical and governmental documents and, with the help of Google, pretty much make sense of it... eventually!

I actually think the OPTN document describes the allocation much, much better than what I tried to offer in the June Newsletter.

Is there anything specific I can help you out with?

You guys are funny! Thanks...

I read it again and some of the words are making some sense. I started to copy and paste the phrases then realized I was copying most of it.....

Sorry Dennis, I won't bug you about it. If I keep reading it it might start making sense and I'll probably be looking up some words. Hubby has an appointment next week...it will be the moment we find out where we go from here then I'll read it again.

Thank you........
