Hi, Virginiamom-- I used to work for a small law firm before I resigned. Wasn't a paralegal because I didn't have a degree but was doing paralegal work. My MELD has held steady at 8 (although haven't tested it in a long time due to no INR or creatinine being drawn to use for calculating).

If your daughter is able to work with the deadlines for a nice boss, then she should be able to handle it, but in my case I worked under a slave-driver, both in the office AND at home which affected my health. I also had other health problems that slowed me down, so my boss was always barking, "Let's pick up the pace" which is going to be the situation pretty much anywhere in society (time is money).

Some of the ways cirrhosis affected my job were when HE came to call on a bad day. Phone messages were illegible and I couldn't remember what case I was working on for more than 20 mins. Then speech was more slurred, causing communication problems, and almost everyday I was falling asleep over my computer. The final straw was when I drove home from work on a highway in my sleep!

Maybe I could have handled the job better if my husband hadn't been....well, the way he is.....and if my boss hadn't also, but neither one of them would make the necessary changes in their personalities to keep me working.

Good luck to your daughter, and I hope she finds herself a good match for her particular circumstances. Smile

YAY for her job and for her not drinking!!

I had to give up my job last December and it haunts me everyday. Thank goodness my work friends and colleauges keep me in the loop....my 'law enforcement family'. I think this will be good for your daughter as long as the fatigue doesn't get to her.

My MELD is probably 10 or less but the fatigue/pain are unbeleivable.

Take your time to smell the roses, and always follow your heart.

Hi sadlystillsane,

Do you think after transplant you will return to the kind of work you were in before? I suffer fatigue regularly at work but not sure if this is down to the liver or the stress and worry. I have 2 kids to help support so I am hoping I can keep going as long as possible. I think my morbid thoughts on mortality is what stops me from concentrating on what I should be doing at work. I would hate for my wonderful partner to have to work harder to make up for what I can't do. The thought breaks my heart.

Many people return to work anywhere from 3 months (very rare!) to whenever they feel up to it, they are doing well and can find a job. You may have to change careers if you did a lot of lifting or other "heavy" work before transplant.
