Hello everyone, Im usually on here about my mom..she has cirrhosis due to fatty liver diagnosed a year ago..But this time it is about myself...i am in panic mode. I went for blood work and was told that my liver enzymes are elevated. and my good cholesterol is low and the bad one is high...could the cholesterol cause my liver enzymes to elevate? I am so stressing. I don't take any medication other than prenatel vitamins because I am a breastfeeding mom....please somebody explain this to me...Im 35 yrs old and never had any health issues before.

Elevated liver enzymes can be caused by a lot of things, so as hard as it is to do don't panic. Something is out of whack, and you'll need to follow up with your doctor to find out what. I've never heard of a cholesterol connection, but then.....
Peace be with you,

Mike

So do I just stay with my family doctor or start going to my moms liver specialist?

High triglycerides can indeed cause elevated enzyme readings, as well as obesity and other non-emergent causes. I'd advise you to continue to follow up with your physician unless more evidence emerges. Remember though, I'm not a medical professional, so follow your gut! Bj

Make sure your dr. knows about your mother's condition, then ask if he thinks you should be referred.
Peace be with you,

Mike

I'm an Advocate

jennb,

Ok I'm going to go against the grain a bit here.

Yes Elevated liver enzymes can be caused by many things.

However with the fact that your cholesterol is high and the family history of Fatty liver I would request a Ultra Sound at least.

I'm really not sure of the facts but there is a rare type of Fatty Liver that can happen during pregnancy. It's terribly dangerous and can continue after delivery. maybe the fact that you are breastfeeding makes a difference.

The main reason I would pursue a answer now is because you're going to continue to worry until you know. Often our fears are much worse than the truth. Remember just because your Mom's fatty Liver advanced to Cirrhosis doesn't mean that even if you have Fatty liver that it would progress the same way.

Check it out for your own peace of mind.

Gail
