I saw a ENT doc today. He used silver nitrate and cauterized some tiny blood vessels in the front part of my right nostril, I have to apply an ointment on it nitely to prevent infection. It was a painless procedure. I sure hope it works as I had my last bleed a week ago.

NSAIDs do present a much higher risk of bleeding problems for those of us with cirrhosis, and should definitely be avoided. If your doctor specifially prescribes one for you, be certain to remind him/her of your past nosebleeds.

Sammy,

No I do not take nsaids. We do have a central humidifier. my platelets have been fluctuating between 50-60,000, not my lowest number but but not my best number either.

The doctor used a long probe with a small mirror on the end. My left nostril was okay. My right nostril showed inflamed tiny blood vessels. Near the front of my nose. He cauterized that area. My last 3 bleeds were from my right nostril. He did not seem to think platelets caused the bleeds, but perhaps, prolonged it.

Dach.

It's not even funny, but I got my first nosebleed today in months.

I know mine is from spending the day in the car with the air conditioning going.

The dry air always causes problems.

Since you are not taking NSAIDs dryness could still be the problem.

Keeping you nose moist helps a ton.

The doctors have an ointment that you can put in your nose to keep is moist.

Have you tryed a nety-pot?

Good luck.

Sammy.

bjlvls is right.

NSAIDs will thin your blood and can easily cause or make nosebleeds worse.

You would be surprised how many general doctors and others that don't specialize in livers are not aware of this.

I've been to the emergency room many times, and I've always have been the one that have to tell them that I can't take NSAID's.

That also goes for the dentist etc.

But it's not only nosebleeds, it can also cause your varices to bleed.

So please be carefull.

Sammy,

Sorry to bring up a sore subject! I do take one of my medicines by nasal spray (calcitonin-salmon for prednisone induced osteopenia). Haven't tried a nety pot yet but have heard it is good for the nasal passages.

Susie, the neti-pot is great. Before the transplant, my nose was always plugged with dry blood in the mornings. After I started using the neti-pot first thing in the morning, I could breathe clearly all day. (Now, no need for the net-pot, breathing clear and easy!)
Peace be with you,

Mike

Nsaids also increase the risk of renal failure in Liver patients.

They can cause you to have Heptorenal syndrome.

Nsaid drugs is what caused jaundice with me in the first place 18 years ago. I also was tested for ANY kind of hep and they did not find it. Little did either of us know it was autoimmune hep and the nsaid drugs just made it worse. NO nsaid drugs for me. I won't even take a tylenol unless its absolutely neccessary. However if you hep Dr. says its ok then you also need to make yourself comfortable. I also suffer from osteopenia prednisone

induced. I am allergic to Vit D that makes it worse so I am screwed but deal with it

as best I can but will not take nsaid. Just my opinion. Cheryl
