I am currently on a pain medication of methadone 40mg 120 a month 4x a day, 10mg, 30 a month 1x a day,and hydrocodone/apap 10mg/500mg 120 a month 4x a day for break-thru pain. I also take Topamax 100mg 30 a month 1x a day for migrains, warfarin 5mg 30 a month, 1x a day for blood clots, lunesta 2mg 30 a month 1x a day for sleep aid, cyclobenzaprine 10mg 30 a month 1x a day for muscle relaxation at night, furosemide 20mg 60 2x a day for water retention, proventil inhaler 2 puffs 4 x a day for lung congestion. Now, to my problem and question. The FDA has changed the methadone delivery system to the drugstores. They will no longer give the 40mg pills to them. I need to find something that will be equivalent to that effect or greater since they really did not do anything other than numb the pain anyway. I have been on them for over 7 years. I cannot take oxycotton as it makes my stomach upset, so that is one that is out of the question. Can you make some suggestions that I might give to my doctor as she is an internist and not a pain management dr. Thank you for all your help

Hello Cieside. Welcome to the Chronic Pain Group. My name is Dr Patty and I am the leader of this group and the moderator of its counterpart The Chronic-Intractable Pain & You Group, which is a group that I not only have inside mdjunction but in other areas of the net. I don't understand why there has to be this change in your methadone? It has been a long time since I have taken this medication. You said something about how it is packaged now. It seems like you have quite a few pain and other issues. I am sorry for all that you have had to endure. I am glad however that you found us. You will never ever have to suffer alone again I would like to know a little more and also understand. Where are you from? I am from CA.
Hugs and Prayers For A Better Pain Day,

Dr. Patty

Glad to have you with the group. I've seen you at the Fibro group too. The people here on the MDJunction support groups are such wonderful people, and so supportive. Take care and we'll be talking again soon, I'm sure.

Hi Dr, I am from Las Vegas, although I have only been here about a year and a half. I ran away from 20 years of hurricanes after the last 2 years of the totally destructive one on the coast of Florida where I lived in Pensacola. We were totally wiped out by Ivan. And after Katrina that was it, we left. packed what we had left in the Jeep and came to Vegas, I always said I would retire here and here is where I am. Anyway these are my active problems :

*Lupus Anticoagulant

* Antithrombin III Deficiency

* Chronic Nondecubitus Ulcer Of The Medial Left Shin

* Chronic Nondecubitus Ulcer Of The Medial Right Shin

* Chronic Pain Syndrome

* Deep Venous Insufficiency Of The Leg

* Essential Hypertension

* Multiple Pulmonary Emboli

* Nicotine Dependence

* Oral Thrush

* Protein C Deficiency

* Protein S Deficiency

* Thrombophlebitis Of Superficial Vessels Of The Lower Extremity

With the methadone from what I understand, the FDA has said that they will no longer allow the Doctors to prescribe anything above 10mg for pain patients and the pharm's cannot fill anything above it. 40mg will only be allowed to be given out in the hospital environment. This will create a huge problem for me and as my doctor is an internast and not a pain mgmt. I am attempting to find something that she might be able to substitue for the methadone prescription. If anyone has any ideas I am open to them all I really need some help as my refills come up within the next 2 weeks and I an running out of time. Here is a list of all of my meds so you see and make nothing interacts.

Hydrocodone-Acetaminophen Yu, Nancy 1 tablet by mouth four times a day prn breakthrough pain. 10-500MG TABS 30 120 0

1/15/2008 Methadone HCl Yu, Nancy TAKE 2 TABLETS TWICE DAILY 40MG TBSO 30 120 0

1/15/2008 Methadone HCl Yu, Nancy TAKE 1 TABLET DAILY for total rx of 80 mg in am, 10 mg at 2pm, 80 mg qhs 10MG TABS 30 30 0

12/11/2007 Topamax Yu, Nancy take 1 tablet by mouth at bedtime 100MG TABS 30 30 3

10/9/2007 Lunesta Watson, Roosevelt TAKE 1 TABLET BEDTIME 2MG TABS 30 30 3

9/4/2007 Cyclobenzaprine HCl Yu, Nancy TAKE 1 TABLET BEDTIME PRN 10MG TABS 30 30 5

8/14/2007 Cephalexin Yu, Nancy TAKE 1 CAPSULE 4 TIMES DAILY. 500MG CAPS 7 28 0

8/2/2007 Warfarin Sodium Yu, Nancy AS DIRECTED 5MG TABS 30 24 5

4/26/2007 Proventil HFA Yu, Nancy INHALE 1-2 PUFFS EVERY 4-6 HOURS AS NEEDED AND AS DIRECTED. 108 (90 Base)MCG/ACT AERS 30 6.7 11

1/11/2007 Furosemide Yu, Nancy TAKE TABLET TWICE DAILY 20MG TABS 30 60 3

I will say this, I have been on these meds for over 7 years so they really don't do alot to control the pain anyway., they just sort of numb it a little. I have a high tolerance to both pain and meds. Any help is appreciated. Talk with ya'll soon. Thanks. Cecelia

[b]Hi Cecelia and welcome to our group. Call me Patty or Dr Patty. I have pain just like you do. I have some possible suggestions that you should ask your doctor about. When having a non pain management doctor caring for you it has its pros and it cons. Has your doctor ever suggested the fenatnyl patch for you? Your doctor would know your history better than I and I am a psychotherapist, PsyD, not an MD. You have quite a history there. I have not heard of this thing with the methadone and wonder if anyone else has? Is this in just Las Vegas?

Hi Patty, As far as I know from what the pharmacist has told me and what I have seen online, the FDA is the one controlling this action. 40mg pills will only be available at hospitals for pain relief. I used to use the fenatnyl patch, however it did not work for me..As I said I have a high tolerance and a lot of drugs don't work on me, I was recently in the hospital and they gave me a shot of something that was supposed to be better than morphine, but again, it did not work, we waited an hour and there was no effect at all. Right now my dr said she talked with pain mgmt and they said as long as it takes the edge off and for as long as I have been on it, I should not change medicines. I have been on methadone for over 7 yrs and all it does is take the edge off.

Hello cieside. I have another video (not sure), but definitely an article that help out. Many doctor's are waiting to have their licenses renewed. Most were revoked for a doctor who may have known some a lot about pain. The problem is that we need to educate the FDA. I will try to find that article and send it to your email addy. Could you send me your email address so that we can dicuss this stuff privately.
