Hey all, sorry to make your acquaintance, I hate to see others in such agony. I have a comment on self meds. I'm a massage therapist and have worked w/Chiro., worked for hospice and did nursing asst. for almost 10 yrs. Most dr's will advise against alchohol or anyother mood altering substance for the simple risk of drug interation or conditional reactions, like high BP. Stimulants even like caffiene can be dangerous for some people. Alcohol is a downer, so being already borderline clinically depressed, it's not wise to indulge.

I know in college, for massage therapy, when we learned about the nervous system we were taught to refuse to treat a client/pt that we suspected on something or under the influence because of the high probability of something troubling happening, not only in the hr of treatment but up to 72 hrs after.(we could be held liable) If you go to a massage therapist and they do not ask you to fill out a form, listing all meds that u are currently taking, legal or otherwise, this therapist is not working under what is regarded as good practice. State regs are varied but it really is that important. Hate to sound like a therapist, but I am.

UNFORTUNATELY---I am also, now, in massive, chronic, crippling pain, due to Fibro. I have a great dr, though, some don't. But if you don't have one, who pays attn to your complaints and works with you, there are greener pastures to be had. Your finding one is in your lap and a bad dr will treat you as long as you let him, smiling over his rx pad and saying just take this and come back, ya'll, ya hear? I know that I am in atleast a painscale 4 everyday and it gets up to 99,999,999,999 on the 1-10 scale sometimes. We, meaning I, can get so desperate for releif that we try anything. Been there done that and it almost cost me my life, because I did not ask advise of dr. It takes the patience of Job to find that right treatment plan and even then we are not quaranteed for THAT one to work for a long enough period to put us back in the land of the living. It's frustrating and depressing. (@times)

So, if i can offer advice, don't add or take away anything out of the advise of a GOOD dr's plan of care for you. Sometimes even the holistic remedies and dietary suppliments will enteract with the proven meds the dr's put us on or the underlieing causes of our pain. The sqeaky wheel gets the oil, so squeak until he listens or find another that is current to the needs of your condition. (they are able to obtain cont'd education credits to keep them updated on latest med science and research, ask ur dr if he/she does this because a good one will)

When I was first experiencing this mysterious unrelenting pain I did the "gray area" self meds and eventually it ended up increasing my symptoms, toxins do that.

Hope you each keep squeaking until you get heard and treated properly.

Cyndi

I think it was the book "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley (I read it in college as part of my literature in technology class?) where they had this "magic drug" that everyone was encouraged to take that made everyone feel great and had no side effects (I'm sure there was a side effect of taking away individual thought); isn't literature great!
