I just posted this in the Fibro group too. But thought it would be a good thing to ask here too.

I know that some of you have talked about different types of patches for pain. Can you tell me more about them? Like:

~ What are the brand, type, dosage?

~ Do you get them from a pain management specialist? Or a general physician? Or a rheumy?

~ Are they expensive?

We recently got a sample in the mail for a patch called: WHITEE Patch for joint and back pain. It states that it's an advanced herbal technology targeting the root causes of pain.

Now I'm curious about these patches. So whatever you can tell me about them- I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Amy

The pain patches that I have taken are called Duragesic patches which is the nongeneric and the fentanyl patches with are the generic. They start at 25 mcg of the pain killer fentanyl and they are usually changed every 72 hours (though I have known people who have changed them every 48 hours). They come in 25, 50, 75, and 100mcg. I take 2 75's.

There are also lidocaine patches and that type of patch puts the numbing medication lidocaine on to a sore area. I used those when I had the shingles and then hadn't used them again.

The fentanyl patches I believe you can get it from any doctor who can write for triplicate medications. They are more common for pain management doctors, though I have seen neurologists prescribe them and some family practice and internal medicine doctors.

The lidocaine patch can also be prescribed by any doctor.

i have used the lidocaine patch, the were not much good to me. but i think that if i didnt have such intense pain that maybe the might work. they might work on light muscular pain, like if a "normal" person over did it working in the yard one day ya know. my mother is on the fentanyl patch because she is allergic to the glue that they use on the duragesic. she uses the 100mcg and gets pretty good relief from it, however on the evening of the 3rd day she is ready to change the patch. she does have some itching around where the patch is, but i guess that is to be expected she does have a sticky patch covering an area of skin so there is no air getting in there. we have always gotten these patches from our pain specialists. but we try to leave all of our pain products with our pain guy.

I have been on the fentanyl patches for 2 years. I wish I had never ever put the first one on. My doc was trying to help me cope with the pain and work. In the beginning they worked great. I started at 25mg and gradually moved up to 100mg. You will be addicted to them. They are on your body 24/7 and the longer you use them the less effective they become, but if you try to come of off them you will have major withdrawal. I am talking sweating, headache, nausea, anxiety to the max, shakes etc. I have been working on getting off of them for over 3 months and I may be completely off of them in 2 more months. If you try to cold turkey it,they can kill you. This is a heavy duty narcotic! If you run out, it can be really bad.I am not being overly dramatic although I know it looks that way. I just wish I had known all this before I put the first one on. It is sooooooooo not worth it.

I have also done the lidoderm patches and they didn't help either because of the pain being so deep into the muscles.

Being on any type of pain medication is going to give you withdrawl sypmtoms if you try to come off of them. And yes she will become addicted to them, but being addicted to a drug under doctors care is alright, as long as she isn't increasing her dosage (using more than one at a time)by herself, she will be alright. These patches are not made for you to come off of them. Everyones body builds up a tolerance to drugs after you take them for so long also. My mother started on the 25 patch as well and now she is at the 100 level.. but she started them 8 years ago. Being afraid to become addicted to pain medication is going to get you into a lot of pain and that is the only thing it is going to accomplish is pain. There is a huge difference between having a junkie addiction, and an addiction because you have to be in order to live.
