Hi, My name is Taylor. I am a 19year old college sophomore suffering from fibromyalgia and chronic migraines. For my Psychology class i am going to write a paper about adolescents and chronic pain/serious illness. If anyone would like to share they're own experiences between ages (16-22) that would greatly help me. And if anyone knows of any scholarly writings or sites i could refer too for information that would be extremely helpful. This subject is near and dear to my heart as i said earlier i myself have chronic pain and my 13 year old sister suffers with chrons disease. I would really like to find out how others in my own age group are dealing with they're pain and illness. What support is out there for people so young. What support is out there for their families? How do they cope? What effects does it have on they're social, emotional and psychological being? Any information would really help!

Hon I am not 22 but I would like to help you!

Many people like myself are send to Pain Clinic for managing pain.Myself I was for injections call nerve block.I am getting corticosteroids injections too but nothing helps. You can feel better just if you can afford massage therapy, physiotherapy, acupuncture etc..........but from my experience nothing works. They say stress may worsen your condition and sometime I agree because more stress I have, more stiff I feel in my neck.Medications like Percocet may help you but this is just temporally relieve.

I got surgery last year and now waiting for one more. This is what chronic pain does in some people.Surgery is risky too but no other choice,it may give me some hope.

SOMETHING FOR YOU!!!!!!!........IT MAY HELP YOU!!!!!!

As the parent of a teenager with chronic pain for more than 1.5 years, this is a topic I discuss often with other "Pain Parents." Doctors throw around big words but still send you home with a child in terrible pain... And not one gives you any insight or points you to any resources on how to parent a child in chronic pain. The support network my daughter has is basically one we have built ourselves -- old friends who love her, new friends who also have chronic pain and understand where she is coming from.

She had a migraine that NEVER STOPPED for 1.5 years. Doctors gave up on her, told her she was "just depressed," or said this was just her life now: constant pain in a dark, quiet room. So many times, the doctors she trusted to help her just broke her spirit. Today, we have found some relief by doing our own research and discovering a new diagnosis with a surgical treatment, so now, finally, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. But the distrust she now has for doctors and "specialists" may never go away, and she'll have to rebuild the friendships that crumbled when she had to leave school and was too ill to spend time with other teenagers. Sometimes it makes her angry, but mostly it makes her sad.

I am 22 and have been dealing with severe chronic back issues for over a year. I am also a student, a history major. I get treated like a drug addict or a potential one, I have tried everything under the sun to control my pain and am really at a lose of how I am suppose to live with lvl 8 pain all the time. It seems the more honest and upfront you are with doctors the less they trust you or seem willing to help. I also suffer from depression, anxiety attacks, and aspergers syndrome which I am sure all puts me in a certain light. Right now I am looking into getting a ct/mylo gram because of the boney changes in my back over the last two years. Most of all I am sad and depressed for having my youth stolen from me along with the lack of understanding from the medical community.

Hi thor89,

I am sorry that you are hurting from the lack of knowledge and understanding of the medical community on how to treat chronic pain patients with respect and dignity. I feel for you being so young and having the life you planned on altered so much from pain. It is hard enough even in the fifites to deal with being less mobile than some 80 and 90 year olds and to know you have 20-30 years ahead with more pain and less mobility.Dr's often lack empathy, because they have never experienced chronic pain. This does not give them the right to treat you as drug seeking to get a high. We are here for you, you are not alone. All I can say is keep seeking answers. There are good Dr.'s out there, but it sometimes takes time to find them.

Hugs,

scorpioj
