and they do the kind where the cut through the ligament at the bottom of your wrist?

the ligament rolls up into this lump thing that can limit mobility and cause pain when you try to do things like push yourself up with your hands flat.

I spent a couple of weeks rubbing them aggressively quite painful but my goal ewas to flatten them out and to get them more mobile....it works but now I found out that you do have to stay on top of it, and keep rubbing them down but it doesn't hurt as much as the first time.

At any rate, this seems to be working for me ....therefore I can add back into my life piano playing and yoga.

If anyone is having problems, this might help

Smile Hi Natalie! Welcome to the cts family!!! I am not a doctor--but, i do have something that sounds like what you are describing-----in the palm of the hand---i have a big lump---it is a hard area and goes up to the ring finger---it is called dupuytrens contracture---you can go to a support group on this website that is all about it. It does sound kinda like that----it affects the tendons---they after time bend the fingers down and if not taken care of the fingers will be all clenched into your fist....Have u been to a hand specialist?? The surgeon would be able to tell you for sure what the situation is..... Take care. Welcome to the cts support group..hugs, SunflowersSmile

Hi Natalia, you said the cut at the bottom of the wrist, do you mean above the wrist on the palm, because that is where mine is just above the wrist, and I was wondering if I will ever be able to lay my hand flat down again and put pressure on it. My massage therapist was suggesting I do yoga to help strengthen and strech but then I thought its way too early, I can't put my hand flat on the floor and I don't have the strength for that right now! Good for you that you are able to play piano and do yoga, how long ago did you have your surgery done?

I still have a lump in a circle around the incision 13 wks post-op. I have been massaging it since the stitches were out (not very vigourously at first!) Now I can massage hard, but I wouldn't want to lean on the palm of my hand with all my weight. I can't clap my hands either, which looks really rude when I am at an event where one should clap!

I had that lump for a long time post surgery then it was like a little ball rather than a lump. I kept coming on here and asking about it because I thought it was never going away. I honestly can't remember how long it took, I know it was a long time but the lump went away and I can flatten my hand on a surface and even clap my hands. Sometimes if I type too long or wash too many dishes, whatever, I will still feel that little ball and some minor pain but nothing at all that actually bothers me.

I recall that there was quite a bit of time with my right hand before I was comfortable putting pressure on on the palm/wrist. You know, like when you go to push yourself up off the floor or something.

With the tendon transfer on my left, I didn't think I was EVER going to be able to do it again! LOL! That one took nearly a solid year before I was comfortable doing it. And there was a huge bump on that wrist. It was so big my watches barely even fit! That's probably why I asked the doctor about it. He said he wasn't sure if it would ever go away or not. It pretty much did, but you can still feel a slight difference between the two wrists on that spot.

Hi guys.

the cut for the surgery went through the ligament at the base of the hand....cut it completely in half....both hands, it's where your wrist rests by the key board, or where you bend your hand when you wave up and down. Healed well and when I realized I needed to do some therapy, (I had been hospitalized for another problem and hadn't realized that my hands were not healing right, quick I just started rubbing on them hard, every day, every hour, as much as I could....hurt like hell, but now there is no ridge on the side of my hands. It took dicipline but worked. The surgery went great and I am quite pleased with my hands now....I am playing a little piano again and hope to keep working up on that.

Why couldn't I go back to the carpel tunnel surgery doctor...well that's a long story relating to why I had open lung surgery...

still not well enough to go back and see him yet....

sigh

Natty, that sounds great! I'm so happy for you! To be honest, I've never had nerve enough to do more than tinkle at the ivories since I had my surgery. I've always been afraid to find out that I couldn't play anymore. That would break my heart.

In fact, I've been giving serious consideration to selling the piano, but I can't seem to bring myself to do it.

If you're up to it, please tell us what happened with the doctor(s) and why you couldn't go back to the one that did the CTS surgery.
