Hello I am a parent of a 10 th grade student with LD's and IEP in public school, recently physically attacked by another girl student for no reasons at all. School suspended girl but offered no conflict resolution, remediation nor reconciliation of any type.

Police was reported and did not filed a report yet, they never called me back and after repeated calls i feel discouraged by heir lack of responsiveness.

A gang a girls including attacker showed up at the school for 2 days after the incident, they looked for my daughter, threatened her friends, thank god my daughter was not in school due to the injuries.

School has been contacted and emailed by me several times since than, not without difficulties and persistence I only spoke with dean of security which offered to walk my girl to the subway for one day only.

No information were yet provided about how long is the suspension supposed to last and what safety measures is the school implementing to warrant my girl safety. I have asked for a meeting with the family and the girl and school administrators, no reply of any type.

I am a single parent,I believe in parental involvement even with teen age students, I have always and will always strongly advocate for my daughter right to have an education FAPE. Since she got an IEP in 2002, I have been fighting the system with teeth an nails and got some successes and many failures.

But public high schools in NYC are really disappointing, budget cuts have clearly lowered the standards of education, safety and urgency and willingness to deal with parents like myself and help and fulfill duty with student especially if classified learning disabled.

Regardless of student with special needs they are supposed to meet 100% of state grade standards and expectations just like all students. Students with special needs in classroom packet with 34 kids are to say the least, at disadvantage, school don't offer any extra academic resources, no after school tutoring, week end programs, and parents alike myself had to solely rely on individualized tutoring to boost up the academic progress. Schools don't hear, don't want to hear that there are problems, don't want to be accountable for student failure and are consumed with overworking, understaffed and state and DOE school grade compliance instead of accessing and implementing organizations that are out there to do this job, or use additional resources to boost student academic progress and graduation rates, and offer career and college counseling, and offer academic extra support, or improving and addressing and coaching staff and students about bullying and safety etc.

The excuse is all the same, not enough money or staff available.

Basic academic services, special accommodations, tutoring help are amongst the many things that my child school is lacking of.

Guidance counselors: They are not geared towards counseling but towards doing paper work, children are never counsel, ever, they are shushed away from guidance suites, by the same counselor they are supposed to get help from, even if in tears and in need of a safe space and a adult considerate and emphatic talk.

Life of a teen age student in the public school system like my child is dammed to fail, and that's why the drop out and don't get a Regents diploma as they supposed to.

No guidance is offered for college hunting, only if the student has an outstanding GPA they are offered resources and help otherwise students and parents are on their own, have to source out other resources and get help outside of school, more work for the parent indeed.

I don't know what to do at this point, time is limited, my resources minimal and have no family help or support around myself, though, I cannot let this slide, and let my girl feel that it is ok to be attacked in school and that this it is ok for the school not to reply and address these issues. How many times am i have to call the school to get anaswer on finding resolution or remediation of some type between the girls and the families. Are schools ever going to embrace the reality that they have to teach life cooping skills, conflict resolution, stress cooping strategies, life skills and management, all topics that schools lack so much of in their curricula.

I am looking for Any links, non profit organizations providing parents and students support for bullying and any information regarding the DOE in NYS compliance and regulations when learning disabled student are victims of on and off premises physical attacks and bullying??

Thank you for reading this.

First of all let me welcome you to the group. In my opinion the first step really should be to tell your daughter that this kind of abuse is not o.k. that its not acceptable. I might also ask her where she is getting beat up and maybe to skip some of those places.

I hear you on the lack of support from the schools. It's not much different here in TX. One thing we've learned is that whoever was lead in the IEP has their license on the line. If they don't follow through with what was outlined in the IEP, they can find themselves without a license. Have you contacted the local Education Agency for the state or your area?

Bullying knows no bounds. My daughter has experienced it from early on. Are you able to file your own civil law suit against the girl(s)? Possibly contacting the local newspapers and T.V. shows might be a solution to help get things resolved. Just an idea. I hope your daughter is alright and healing well.

Not a psychiatrist (pdoc) nor a therapist...what you read are my thoughts and there you go.

My mind is like lightning...one brilliant flash and it's gone.

I was bullied in high school. When I was at my junior prom, this senior guy who hated me, Curtis, was dancing with a girl in my class named Fiorella who also hated me and when I was walking onto the dance floor to dance with my date, he bumped into me and knocked me down. I sprained my right knee and missed two days of school. I later learner from my mom that while she and my dad danced, she heard Fio tell Curtis to 'bump into them'. They did, but fortunately, neither of them were hurt. The principal wasn't going to do anything to him because he would leave the school a month later anyway. I'm 22 now.
