I wrote a long message and it disappeared. Perhaps just as well. In a nutshell, my brother in law fits the bill for BPD and has negatively affected my mentally ill sister and nephews since my sister married him. He is an alcoholic who stopped because my sister threatened him with a restraining order and yet he won't go to AA or any other therapy to address his terrible personality issues. Although my nephews and sister go to therapy and take medication he doesn't and he makes their lives worse. I don't want my nephew in the hospital a 4th time before he's 19. How in the hell do you get the jerk to go to therapy or preferably a psychiatrist to get diagnosis? Or rather accept that he has a problem? I won't get into all of the bad things he's done or not done, but he's ruining my sister and nephew's lives.
Bipolar 1, Simple Partial Seizures, and migraines

Psychiatric meds:

Lithium ER (900 mg)*Tegretol XR (1400 mg)*Lamictal (100 mg)*Geodon (160 mg)*Navane (5 mg)*Seroquel XR (100 mg)*Klonopin (.5 mg)

Ativan 1 mg "as needed" (I rarely take it.)*Seroquel regular 50 mg "as needed" (Only if I'm getting elevated.)

Other meds:

Propranolol (40 mg)*Levothyroxine (150 mcg)

My mix is side effect friendly for me.

Unfortunately until someone is ready to get help its just not likely to happen. Have you tried talking to people in the borderline in the family group about their experiences?

I'm not a doctor or a therapist, I'm just someone who is working on my issues just like everyone else. I can, however, offer support, understanding, and opinion from personal experience.

C, could it be possible that your brother-in-law is on a dry drunk rather then having bpd or a mental illness?

Since he doesn't go to AA, he has nothing to help him with his addictive personality problems. That can lead to someone being very nasty and it can go on for years.
