I was wondering if anyone here with hypo mania or manic-depression with mixed states has tried Cymbalta without a mood stabilizer? My doctor is recommending I try it since I have generalized anxiety disorder and body pain, too.

Yes, I used Cymbalta about 4 yrs ago but in conjunction with Lith and Carbamazepine, it made me very irritable and agitated. I was a pharmaceutical rep for Eli Lilly (the pharmaceutical company that makes the drug at the time) and got it free. I am now on disabilty. It has both Serotonin and Norepinephrin. My mother-in-law uses it very successfully for diabetic neuralgia pain. We all respond differently to different drugs, so I don't want to go against what your doc recommends, but that is what my experience was as a Bipolar I, OCD, rapid cycler. Hope u feel better soon.

I wouldn't suggest using it without a mood stabilizer, it could cause mania in bipolar patients. I tried it, but it made my chest very tight, so I had to quit it. I think it was from too much norephenephrene. Everyone responds differently though. I wish you luck on it.

Again everyone is different. I knew someone had a side effect started 3 wks after they took it, they are not bipolar but had a lot of anxiety and panic. This side-effect was diareah. The med got rid of the anxiety though.

After my initial breakdown i only took anti-deps from the Tricylic family of anti-deps for 11 yrs and also took Klonopin for anxiety a low dosage daily. Eventually when my Mom passed away i had an episode where my pdoc gave me a mood stabilizer that was Lithium, now its 14 yrs later and i'm still on it. I wish you all the best.
