Has anyone tried holistic medicine and spiritual teachings instead of shrinks and meds? I'm so miserable and Im not getting better after 10 years of therapy. I'm just really angry. Thanks for letting me vent. I just spent my 45 b-day in hospital. Not a good start. Hope everyone else is doing better than me.

I think that spiritual teachings can really help give us some peace and serenity, but I don't personally believe that they are any substitute for meds. Bipolar disorder is a brain disease that requires real medicines that have been studied and tested. You can't get that with holistic medicine, IMHO.

That being said, things like yoga and meditation can really make you feel better. I just think they have to be part of a regime that includes medicines.

Just my opinion.

My opinions are just opinions, and should be taken as such. I am not an expert on medicines or BP disorder.

I am sorry that you spent your birthday in the hospital. I have never tried holistic medicine or spiritual teachings instead of meds, but have thought about it as I am on a lot of meds.

I do know that a healthy diet and regular exercise can help. Just my opinion as well.

Sincerely,

I spent one of my birthdays (maybe age 35) in the hospital too. The key is to tell someone it is your birthday. They got me a cake and patients even gave me presents. Unfortunately my husband couldn't come that day because the visitation day for dual diagnosis was not on that day.

No offense but I believe hollistic medicine and spiritual teachings are charlatanry. Of course I'm not religious either. I take standard medications because there has been extensive research on it and proven success. I don't want to put myself at risk of more hospitalizations or worse. But for those that like something else, to each their own.

Bipolar 1, Simple Partial Seizures, and migraines

Psychiatric meds:

Lithium ER (900 mg)*Tegretol XR (1400 mg)*Lamictal (100 mg)*Geodon (160 mg)*Navane (5 mg)*Seroquel XR (100 mg)*Klonopin (.5 mg)

Ativan 1 mg "as needed" (I rarely take it.)*Seroquel regular 50 mg "as needed" (Only if I'm getting elevated.)

Other meds:

Propranolol (40 mg)*Levothyroxine (150 mcg)

My mix is side effect friendly for me.

Happy belated birthday! I'm sorry you had to spend it in the hospital, but at least you were probably safest there - albeit not the most excited. I don't root for people to go off of their meds but noticed some non-Rx things can help like diet and exercise. I can't emphasize enough how much exercise helps, and it's the first thing I STOP doing if I don't feel well which is terrible. Omega-3's are supposed to work great and an overall healthy diet.
